No copied song structure no song?

Hey all, so I've come across a real problem that I have, but I've been wondering if its really a problem at all....
In order for me to make a track I have to tap out a song structure
(to a song I like) like this for instance.
8 bars
kick, bass
8 bars
kick, bass pad, hat
....like that whatever.
If I dont do this, all i can ever get out of my songs is a 3 minute song that doesn't make any sense 10% of the time
or
32 bars of bass, kick, hat build up nonsense that doesn't go anywhere
but the recycle bin. 90% of the time
The song I end up making, copying a song structure doesn't necessarily sound anything like the song I was copying but I'm afraid its going to hinder alot of creativity down the road but at this point...it's better than not making anything at all.
Any thoughts on this? Anybody else have to do it this way? I sort of
feel like a lone wolf with this problem.

form is usually what most of the great composers ironed out first.
well themes and form.
the thing with dance is that form is not really that important. The most important thing in a dance track is that part with the kick bass snare. That is the track. |

| i dont really think this is something you can learn. you need to have an idea. creativity its called. look at prodigy or daft punk, or maybe underworld tracks (three of my favorite 90s edm influences), do you see 8 bars of kick and snare in any of their tracks? that was something that came in 98 for the amateur djs (up and coming trance producers at the time) to be able to dj anyway. if you want to make repeatative edm like house and techno (and trance) you dont really need to add a new item every 8 bar. just make a phat groove, put it all over 8 minutes, then mute a few elements now and then, and see if you can put a memorable hook on top at some point (that be trance-arps, a phatt loop from the 70s or a acid synth lead dependent on what genre you want to be in). its really ing simple if you want to go that way. the tricky part is making a cool groove and the hooks. to spice everything up you can add various efex and transitions here and there. |
