Curious what everyone's favorite DJ sets have been so far this year. Real life, in flesh, with your body firmly placed in a space blasted with way too loud music.
My favorite so far has been by Alex.Do at the Dystopian label party a while ago. He's still more locally known but in my opinion one of the best techno DJs out there right now. He went from smart driving techno b2b with Rødhåd into delicious deep, warm, groovy techno in the closing hours. It's rare that a DJ gives me exactly that I want or genuinely surprises me and he did both effortless.
Runner up probably is DJ Sotofett who went from plain weird (think dark techno into dub reggae into NY diva house) into absolutely prime deep house track after track for hours on end.
I also absolutely loved the first hour or two from DJ Pete at Berghain a while ago. He layed down absolutely perfect deep, dreamy and groovy techno which is the kind of stuff that really brings that soundsystem to it's best. Sadly he went into the regular pushing techno fare later on, presumably to appease the usual legion of jacked shirtless guys. I'm still waiting for someone to give me one of these extended sunday sets composed only of the deepest . |

Haven't been to as many parties as I'd have liked, but of the DJ's I heard, I guess Gerd Janson stood out the most. Saw him a couple of times but his set at Robert Johnson was just sublime. Could've been due to the amazing atmosphere and crowd as well, but still..
Or perhaps Gerd Janson all night long in Trouw :p |

Saw him warm up last year, was pretty cool. He seems to be one of those DJs that can go between techno and house effortlessly. |

Man, thinking about this just reminded me of how shamefully little I've been clubbing this year. Provided I'm not too shattered after work, I really should go to this on Friday: http://www.residentadvisor.net/event.aspx?503866
Anyway, the only thing that comes to mind this year is Skirt at Volt 2013. Minimal techno the way it should be played: hard, agile, stripped down and relentlessly funky. |

Aside from the obvious (Garnier, natch), some from memory...
Derrick May at Sonar was an absolute pleasure. We'd wandered over disappointed by Hawtin's BOOM-WHIR silliness and were treated to a real techno set. Music that was brutally hard and energetic but lethally intelligent, mixed with rugged technical excellence.
It was only an hour long set and supposedly a "warm-up set", but Hybrid Soundsystem at Tangled in Manchester was phenomenal. This was a rare example of (basically) a producer DJ being essential: Hybrid has such a distinctive sound that nobody but Hybrid could play that kind of set without sounding like, well... a cheap Hybrid rip-off. It was mostly their own productions but they knew how to play that kind of rampaging dark prog and nasty breakbeat filth to just build the pressure like a steam-cooker.
This may sound daft, but Sister Bliss played a ridiculously enjoyable jacking Chicago house set at Passion. Her mixing was a bit frayed at the edges but the programming was spot-on and it was probably the most energy I've ever heard a DJ wring out of a house set.
Then straight after her, J00F came on and played the best set I've heard from him for a while, an hour of storming techno and then moving into some heavy-hitting trance from Cosmithex, Airwave and Artifact303. Unfortunately half the crowd went into the other room mid-way through to see ing Neelix, but I was so spannered I literally wouldn't see straight and that development was somewhat lost on me.
Special mention must also go the chill-out DJ at this insane psytrance rave I went to at a farmhouse, by the name of LSD-Licious. He pitched up in a deckchair at 10pm in the front garden with a laptop and a supply line of spliffs, playing a brilliant array of eclectic ambient, dub, pop and electronica, and when I left at 1pm the next day he was still playing, totally locked in the zone. 14 hours of surrealistic brilliance. |

One of them came from a local dubstep DJ (think early Scuba, Phaelah type of stuff) that played for an hour on the beach. ing incredible. I don't even remember his name which is a massive fail on my part. What made it amazing though was that I've never heard stuff like that in this city. I was astonished at this guy's skills though. He was playing white label after white label (on vinyl of course) of I never even knew existed, and it sounded lovely.
For the next best performance, my fanboyism is coming out, as Hernan's night here in Toronto was really wonderful. He really is such a master at flow and programming, and after the 1st hour of tech house he brought out the big prog guns. Super drummy. This was one of the nights I was totally sober from entrance at 10:30pm (there was also top-notch local talent opening) until exit at around 5:00am. What really bothers me though was that I heard his set at Circus (or was it Stereo, can't remember) was even better :(
Other than that, I haven't really been out to major events that much. Gigging around the city eliminates alot of potential nights you would like to go to another event of your choosing :p |

Ben Klock has been the standout one for me so far this year - pounding techno in a real sweatbox, shall be going to see him again if he comes back.

This year:
John Talabot b2b Axel Boman, outdoor party on a sunday afternoon.. Just perfect summer music under the sun. They each played a short set then went b2b, they ended with jacking NY house that left the crowd wanting more.
Ron Morelli, L.I.E.S. boss played a private after party to about 100 people, what an eclectic set of raw house, techno, acid, indie rock, disco.. just incredible flow and effortless mixing through genres.
Kyle Hall again outdoors, started playing raw house and by the end he was playing mind melting acid break beat techno, I was blown away.. His mixing got much tighter since the last time I've seen him.
Eddie C: Played a club hours set at a bar.. really fun new disco and slow mo house, he picked up the pace later on in the night.. lots of vocals, very funky.
Young Male: Private party, he played a live set with a TR-909 and Roland SH-101.. the drum machine and synth were plugged into analog guitar pedals; delay, reverb.. a live 909 will beat the out of you, I couldn't believe the thump of that kick with an analog set up.
Coming up, I'm really looking forward to catching Kassem Mosse next week at a private loft party.. I'm a big fan of his music, and I'd imagine he will impress.
Jus-Ed with Tazz warming up at the end of the month, I love his label, he plays music right up my alley. Stoked for that too.. same bar I caught Eddie C. |

Marcel Dettmann was the best gig I've ever been to in my entire life. I still don't know how he kept the perfect flow for 7 hours...wow. Also, he had an amazing interaction with the crowd, including a glass of champagne that he offered to me :p
Ben Klock played 3 hours of pure dark/powerful' Techno. He created an incredible vibe where everyone on the dancefloor was pumping and 'headbanging'. Insane stuff.
LTJ Bukem was also ing epic. Absolutely perfect mixing skills, and the tracks he plays take you to another world. Such a beautiful, elegant and hypnotic sound. Unforgettable. In this same night (DJ Marky Festival), Moodyman was pretty interesting. A very versatile mix between old Disco/House, Techno and a few pop tracks (like Jamiroquai stuff). His transitions are a bit rough but the music was very nice. |
