I don't think that's a fair portrayal of Turkey, specially when it comes to Istanbul. Well, I've already told you this on Facebook, so I don't think I need to repeat myself here.
Still, I'm disappointed. Here's a map with countries that have already hosted the Olympics once (green) or twice (blue):

Which countries were the other front-runners, aside from Spain and Turkey?
I agree with Stephen. To put the Olympics there, given the unrest in that general part of the world, would have been a mistake. Who knows how much worse it will be by 2020 (I know that it might all be fine by then... maybe. But still, it's a pretty mega event, and a very costly one).
