Hey guys,
Just got one of these iConnectMIDI2+ units ($90 @ Sweetwater) and thought I'd let you iPad/iPhone users know about it. It's a 2x2 MIDI interface (standard DIN) with 2 USB device ports that each support audio and MIDI, including support for iOS devices. The cool thing is that USB Port 1 has a feature called AudioPassThru that lets you route audio from your iOS device into your DAW. So, basically, you can sequence a part for an iPad synth (e.g., AniMoog) in your DAW and record the audio from the iOS synth back into your DAW. Apparently, you can also use the two USB device ports to connect and synchronize two computers (e.g., a Mac and a PC). But, overall, this thing gives you a lot of options for utilizing an iOS device with your hardware and/or software setup.
This thing is built like a tank (all metal housing). If you buy the optional power supply ($30), USB device port 1 will also charge your iOS device. Comes with a standard USB cable for connecting the iConnectMIDI2+ to your computer, and a cable adapter (30-pin) for connecting your iOS to the USB device ports. I have my iPad4 connected to this cable via a Lightning-to-30 Pin adapter cable and it works fine. Oh, and there's both a free app and downloadable Mac/PC software for configuring the I/O's and storing them to the unit's flash memory.
I just got it yesterday and haven't had a lot of time with it yet, but let me know if you have any questions and I'll try to answer them.

cryo, the original iConnectMIDI would let you hook up USB MIDI devices (the kind without the round MIDI port), and use them without a computer, with a MIDI controller, etc. Will this new iConnectMIDI2+ still do that? |

Not this particular model. I've read a few complaints about it not having a standard USB input. Apparently, the previous model that it replaced did have a USB input, but didn't support Audio Pass Thru for iOS devices. The next model up (iConnectMIDI4+) does have a USB input, though, but it's quite a bit more expensive. |

This looks surprisingly functional too. I wonder if it'll be one of those Behringer products that's actually ok.

That does look pretty cool. The only drawback I can see with it is that it's only for the 30-pin models and it doesn't look like there's enough space to fit a 30-pin-Lightning adapter in there. |

thx, cryo. wish someone would make a low-cost product that would send controller data to USB MIDI stuff without requiring a computer or $$$$. |

The iConnectMIDI4+ has a 'Host Port' that is actually "hosting" up to 8 class complaint MIDI interfaces/controllers - so you would not need to be connected to a computer with that setup. The iConnectMIDI2+ can operate in standalone mode as well, but you do not have a 'Host Port' for the MIDI controller.
Once you have the MIDI routing and filtering set and saved via iConfig (the software that comes with the iConnectMIDI2+ and iConnectMIDI4+), the hardware can actually send and receive MIDI from the controller, while still using the DIN INs and OUTs. You can even use your iOS like an external sound module at the same time if you wish - but that is technically a computer, yet a very small one.
Cheers!
