Of course people argue and debate with strangers, just as they do on the internet. The internet may just be a more comfortable and safer place to do so. And on the internet, people don't necessarily "seek out" to argue with others. They join open debates and such, which is rarer IRL. |

Healthy discourse so rarely happens in real-life unless you're forensically minded and experienced. It's not exactly common on the internet either, because it's so easy to be acrimonious toward one another since we don't have expression and consequence to distract us; but it's easier for people to carefully construct their thoughts on a subject when they aren't constantly flat-footed.
I'll bicker with people at length because it helps me to formulate my own opinions and views by laying them bare, and hopefully having them deconstructed. So there is definitely some vanity at play, some selfishness, but at times some genuine interest in communicating with other people I would not otherwise be able to reach. |

Actually, people often do, specially in academia, but you can easily see it in bars, cafés, and long queues. |

It's a cheetah not a tiger and it's one of Hal's "tamer" pictures. Excuse my choice of words. |
