Well I couldnt exactly think of a better title, but here goes. Im writing this mostly to put down my feelings about trance music these days and to get some opinions from others. Odds are im going to be flamed into oblivion, but here we go...
Trance ain't what it used to be. This is just my humble opinion, but it seems these days that as elecronica pushes further and further into the mainstream, the less and less original and wonderful it gets. Most new tunes (at least the one flogged by the biggest DJs and are most popular/chart topping) seem to follow the standard big huge buildup/huge crashing anthem routine. Ligaya is a good example. Its a nice tune, but Ive seen it get far more praise than it deserves. Dont get me wrong, anthems can be fun sometimes, but it just seems thats all people are talking about these days. Some of the "biggest" tunes from the past 2 or 3 years, Airwave, Silence, Urban Train, Massive, Southern sun, Pocket Damage ect, havent stuck with me like certain other tunes, like Madagascar, Words, or Feel Free (YdR tune). A bout of nostalgia inspired me to go and download some of my favorite tunes from way back when, and I realized that I just didnt feel about todays average trance tune like I used to. It just doesnt seem like there are many tracks being made these days that seem so special like they used to, and above all, unique.
A lot of DJs seem to be losing it too. I dug up a few old old sets from some of todays top jocks. A lot of them dont play as well as they did back then. I think they are trying too much to play "harder" elecronica. Johan gielen was all over the place trying to throw in Kitikonti-type tunes with trancers in last weekends TE set. Tiesto is trying to mix hard bangin techno in his sets, I have to admit Ive liked it, but I liked him a lot better when he played like he did @ the first innercity (the one that started with universal nation). The only real trance dj thats kept my ear the past few years is PvD. His always seems fresh to me. I love how he plays a lot more house tunes in his sets (emerge, #2 from loveparade pre party, jambe myth, fuel 2 fire, trespasser, outside).
Im listening to a lot of platipus-ish tunes these days, a lot more house, and ive managed to grow a big spot in my heart for breaks. Maybe im just getting tired of the same old stuff and want to expand my musical horizons. Maybe Im just bitching about it because I havent eaten anything all day :p . I was just wondering if there was anyone else who shares my thoughts.

I think the new tracks being produced are getting better and better, not worse and worse. You need to get back to the drugs you were on when you first listened to those tracks, then they will "seem so special" to you. How the can you like house over trance now, you are out of it son... am i stoned..sorry

| I totally agree, trance is not what it used to be. I still like trance, but what I listen to mostly is progressive & breaks. They are much more diverse than most new trance produced. |

I never said I like house over trance, I said Im starting to listen to a lot of it. Its awfully shallow minded to act like a dick to someone because of their choice in music. Btw, Ive never done drugs in my life.

anyways, I TOTALLY agree with you man. Very, and I mean like 1-2 tracks stick with me the way the classics did, from 96-2000. A few months ago I myself started to move on, and now look at me, hehe, Global Underground avatar...completely addicted to sasha, digweed, dave seaman, hybrid and so on :) I don't wanna diss trance, cuz I do like it, but after getting into progressive house and trance, and breaks...I really do believe that trance these days has definately lost it's magic...the sets are worked and peiced together like art..in a way. Compared to a prog set for example, after listening to it a set a few times, i start to understand it, in the sense that I see why each track has been placed in those parts of the set, and how it contributes to the set as a whole, you get what I'm trying to say?
Trance doesn't have that...and the DJ's have really lost their uniqueness, they just try to drop the latest biggest anthems (with the exception of PvD, J00F and sometimes AvB :)). Right now, the genre's I listen to are progressive (house and trance), "trancey" breaks, 1996-2000 trance. Thats all. |

| No trance is not what it used to be...but that is because the scene needs to move on. The trance of this year though is better than what we saw in 2000 or 2001 IMO. |

2000 had way better and more memorable tunes than 2002 has had so far.

That's the way I feel. Maybe it's because they're isn't so many epic/uplfiting tunes out this year |

| I think there are still many great tracks being produced. But I am also getting tired of them all being so similar and anthemish, it just gets boring. |

Even though I've only been into trance for 1 year and a half I have noticed a decline in quality especially for tracks that came out around the end of 2000-2001. I find that trend has reversed for 2002. The tracks coming out now are quite solid in my opinion.
Still though, I have broadened my horizons to include prog house/trance. I just feel like there is so much good music out there that I have yet to discover. It's quite a thrill when I gain appreciation for a certain style or artist. Right now I'm enjoying Adam Beyer and the DJ Kicks series quite a bit.
