Hey guys and gals,
I've been having a hard time trying to come up with anything. I've listened to some of the tracks I like and can't think of anything based off of tracks I listen so when you have time, I would like to hear feedback from everyone on what their approach is when they're writing music like tips and tricks on what they do and I hope this will help me when I'm writing. I appreciate it in advanced.
Thank you

Personally, if I reach a stage of shear block or desire, it's time to take a break. Usually for me it is about 2-3 weeks before the itch comes back.
During that time I will listen to other genres and try not to look for inspiration.
I do try to see certain genres on beatport and try to see what kind of new releases are out.
At times , I also go to my roots. Simply put, I am born and brewed metal and hardcore. The adjustment to the ears however takes a little time.
In essence, listen to something different. Not just a few songs but listen to multiple genres of music (better even if it is NOT electronic music or at least within the last decade /grins)
At times, I purposely try to forget about anything music related. Since I am a gamer, this helps tremendously. Use an alternate hobby |

maybe youre just not a creative person. when you decorate your home, is it just like anyone elses? did u draw anything when you were a kid? whats your job. do you have any ideas in life what so ever or do u just walk along. |

Altough that reply from clay might appear somehow harsh I do agree actually.
Take a break, if you still got no ideas just leave it. Music clearly ain't your thing. |

I appreciate the replies back, I do appreciate it. Understood clay, here's another question, can anyone be creative? In my own personal opinion, I think they can and I'm sure it takes time and work but again I could be wrong. |

well thier is more then one way to skin a cat you may want to try and work in a differnt way. like using sample packs and pratice building tunes and see what comes out of it. |

Are you having problems with coming up with ideas in general, or sound design, or..? You just don't know where to start?
Do you play any instruments? If you're sitting in front of your computer, waiting for the track to magically compose itself, it's not gonna happen. Grab the guitar or go play the piano. Or just play around with your midi keyboard when creating new sounds. Don't give up, It takes time to come up with something good.
I've never been as "creative" in front of my computer as I am when I just play around with a piano or a guitar. Must have something to do with my less-than-stellar sound design skills.
If it's just ideas that you lack and you want to be creative in a certain genre, listen to a load of music in that genre. And I mean truly lots. My best inspirations come to me when I'm out of our apartment, music playing in my headphones. I feel I rarely lack inspiration, but translating those ideas from my head to actual music isn't always that easy.
A thing I often do, is I put some of my favorite tracks on, close my eyes and just lay on the couch. I then imagine these sort of music videos for those tracks and if something really good comes up, I pause the music and write that "inspiration" down. And they can be really simple things like "a low-pitched growling pad plays as the camera pans to Earth". What ever kind of sceneries inspire you, just write them down. |

+ Keep playing, in time you stumble upon riffs etc
+ Use times of emotional highs and lows - many a great track was born in a few minutes of emotional chaos - it's why some great artists did all their best work in short timeframe which they were never able to repeat again
+ Nothing like a bottle of wine / spliff and a film to give you a new intensity / new vision
+ Have in your mind a story to set your track to - ideally this should lead to a resolution
+ Don't be in a hurry, most people have to work real hard to become skilled at anything |
