1. Become legally recognized to practice what you preach.

2. Tradition.

to get laid.

seriously, it's the only time in life when you'll be surrounded by so many of your peers in a setting away from family but still without most of the major responsibilities that make life so dull. assuming your way is being paid for by parents or loans or whatever...

other benefits: connections that could last a lifetime, exposure to you didn't know existed (fields of study, drugs, music genres, etc)

as far as the actual education goes, there are many majors (marketing, business) which IMHO are total bull and really don't need a degree.

Listen to this man. Don't go to college for the degree. Go to college for the experience.

It's a worthwhile experience IMO.

If you go do to college though, make sure it's worthwhile. When it costed $0.005 to get a degree it used to be about getting an education, but these days you have to weigh up whether a history degree is worth the loan / debt you go into to get it, and perhaps a more marketable degree or even trade school or apprenticeship is a better path to take.

Also think about what every other student is signing up for now, because that's the employment market that will be saturated in 4 years time...

Some people say you need it, some say you don't, some say it's all about your connections instead. If you go for it, just be realistic about what the market wants when you're choosing what to do.

My advice is go get a trade, they'll never be able to outsource you

Unless you really know where you want to go in life as a career, don't bother.

I didn't and I'm ing glad I didn't. It took me several years to figure out what I should be doing and all University/college would have done is got me drunk for 4 years and badly in debt, and that was in the UK where student is a fraction of what Americans are subjected to.

I bumped in to an old school friend who went to one of the top uni's in the UK, the type that was smart but wne becuase everyone else was and that you're "supposed" to do it. He got a 1st, and he's working in an off license.

OK, so that's not typical, but it's a common story of thsoe who go to Uni because it's the done thing. Not many of them regret it as such, but it just didn't do anything to enhance their life and if anything just put their working life 4 years behind anyone else who didn't.

my older sister has two degrees and I've been earning substantially more than her for the last decade.

I meet some people here in LA that have six figure debt from college and they are in their mid 30's. One of my buddies got a PHD form Rand and granted he's landed a pretty ing hot job in the middle east, but he also got lucky. There was a very good chance he was going to have a mountain of debt, at 34 years old and no real work experience.

If you want to be a an architect, doctor or lawyer (etc) for sure, then you've got no choice, but otherwise, I say don't bother or at least figure out what you want to do first by spending a few yearsin the real world.

Here's a crazy idea: to study something you actually dig.

I don't think David Byrne has been knighted as of yet.
