Hey. I'm working on a couple new trance/electronica songs, inspired by Burning Man 2013. Any feedback is appreciated!

Enjoyed them they are both much better then the other music on your page Keep up the work.

OK now for real critique.

I think your need to take more inspiration from what is popular or what your trying to do in order to get people to listen. Making music for yourself is great but you can get great satisfaction from people actually enjoying and downloading your music. Just my 2 cents anyways keep working on it =D. It sounds good but they are kind of video game music like and backgroundy. You should be center stage rocking that synth in front of people, but people really don't put music like this on repeat. You have excellent composition skills, but you should try to get in the spotlight.

Thanks for the feedback! I guess you're saying that doing live shows is really the only way to get in the spotlight? If so, any advice for how to go about getting started with that?

Pick a genre you enjoy find the most popular song that you like. Take it into your DAW. Examine it. mark a time signature for each time a new sound or instrument comes in. Learn a genre. Dont try to make your own. Rather take a genre like trance learn the basics sound like everyone else. THEN throw your own into it. But you cant got 90% off into Trazer land. You must gradualy bring the people there by offering what they already like with a hint of trazer.

Basically copy someone. Sounds like plagarism but its not your just taking note of how the beat is constructed. And making your own utillitizing those same time frames and changes.

In dubstep the intro is always 55 seconds. Thats a genre defining feature. Changes a little bit with faster or slower dubstep but for the most part yeah 55 second. And everyone does that. Why? because everyone knows when teh drop hits.

There are certain unique features to each genre like this that arent copying to steal. They are used in every song in that genre. It is what defys the genre.

Also remember less is more. You dont need a million instruments or a bunch of stuff oging on at once. Becuase then everything has to be lower volume in order for it to not crash. People wanna bop there head up and down and tap there feet. That is music. Make them dance. This is EDM. Beats can be simple and catchy. And ride purely on the basis that the synth sounds ing orgasmic. Not piano skills just the synth makes chicks wet. Makes people feel emotion just based on a tone.

If you can copy a main stream genre and make music as good as them it will all click in to place. Live shows will come when your music is good and heard and popular. But you could try to see if there are any EDM concerts in the area or clubs or places then tend to host concerts. These concerts always need acts to go on before the headliners. You can probably talk to the owner of said clubs and show him your demo. That is how you would get a job for the venue. Which is what an opening act would do since he wouldn't travel necessarily with headliners.

Anyways yeah End rant. lol

You said you like armin van buuren? Copy this song straight up http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKFqVx6fufc&list=PL0cWlOyqP6_MbDgLpyOFGwZE7rXvBZQCN That is 2013.

This is definitely helpful! Thanks for ranting! Trance is definitely my go-to genre (like the first song), but I'm trying to experiment with other more dubsteppy sounds (the second song). And yes, I love Armin (especially live). Good call to simply try to emulate his work, for now.

Yeah i feel like your a talented musician but you just are built upon your own foundations. When there is already a formula for what is popular and sounds good. And it sounds like you are almost there. You have a good number of followers i only have like 5 haha. But one thing that helped me alot was reading this book called Dance Music Manual. It has guides for every EDM genre expaining where everyting should be and how teh drums are laid out and what kind of drums you shoudl use and what frequency your synths ahoudl be at to get that perfect sound. Its not cheating its simply a formula. You learn the formula you can write hundreds of hits just like armin.

I'll definitely check out that book. One thing I'm a little confused about is how to have fundamentals like everyone popular YET ALSO have a unique sound?
Rail606
Well main thing is your synths sound. A lot of produces tend to favor a certain type of synth. People can often become fans of producers just because they always have that sound. Everyone has it. You cant copy Armin exactly hes got detuning on his synths hes using effects and stuff. You would never be able to 100% emulate his sound without knowing exactly how he made it. You can get damn close and detune it to how you like it. And even use the type of synth that you think sounds good. Afterall the goal is for it to the music you want to hear but also the music that everyone wants to hear. If you can learn the structure of the genres you will be able to apply your piano skills like crazy.

Nice thing that book teaches you how to make all the synths you hear in popular songs and how to recreate them. So its a very powerful tool in a skilled musician(in a live playing sense.)

There is also mixing or making new genres. Like a new one recently was Trap music. Its like hip hop beats all about bass made by EDM artists. Just a new genre that spawned up got big for a while and has kind of cooled of but its still warm. This happens all the time because music is damn near infinite in how it can sound since you can use any sound.

There is also Nu Disco and bunch of other genres kind of spawning up. Music is more crazy and wild then ever right now and the internet is the perfect tool to connect if you have the right sound the people will listen.

EDIT:
lot of spelling errors sorry getting tired haha

Interesting. Thanks for all the information and feedback. I repeatedly get the feedback, "Less is More," and I'm beginning to understand what that means. It's all about one big powerful synth to make everyone jizz their pants.
