Do you already have an aftermarket headunit?
If not, does your current headunit have the ability for you to connect amplifiers to it via the preamp and RCA connections?
If you don't have one, that will take up most of your budget.
Do you want decent separation of sound? I.e subwoofer to control the bass, component speakers to handle the mids and lows?
With that budget, I would buy a decent headunit, some 6x9 speakers (as you would be hard squeezed to buy the separates) and an amplifier to power them. That should be a reasonable upgrade for $500-600 dollars.
Ideally you want a 4 channel amp powering a set of front components that are controlled by the crossover box (it sends the right frequency of sound to the right speakers) and some rear co axial speakers, and a separate monoblock amp that controls a subwoofer. |

| yeah I spent about $1500-2000 on a pretty sick system on my car. I have a Jensen 7" touch screen head unit, JBL Tweeters (75w rms each) 4 JBL co axial 6x8 door speakers (150w rms each), 1 Kenwood Carbon 12" Sub with a long vented box, powered by a 720w rms 6 channel Kenwood amp. I wanna buy a mono amp so I wont have to bridge the power to both the sub and the 6 speakers. and the quality will be even better if I put those speakers to the kenwood amp. im thinking of getting an alpine amp or polk audio. What do you guys think? Money is def not a huge issue either. |

Don't forget to test your system with proper 'car audio' music:

Aww yeah, Techmaster P.E.B. in the trunk. |

there is no absolute need for a expensive head unit. Anyone with outs will techninally do. You can def. put alot of bass into your car for that price, but I guess it won't qualify as a "good sound system".
If I were you, I'd look for a 2nd hand head unit (but stay away from 2nd head hand units!! I cannot stress this enough) of about 5 years of age. That way you could still get some quality, without blowing your budget. There really aren't that many new features that have risen the last 5 years, advancements have mostly been done in refining and properly integrating existing features like USB-connection etc.
Add a cheapish 4 channel amp as dj_molly is describing in the bottom of his post, and some speakers, all depending on what state the stock stuff is in, and how the car is shaped, you could go with as little as two perhaps, but 2 in the back + sub could be enough, lest you've blown your original speakers to bits :P
I don't know the prices on electronics in your country, but I could definitely find a slightly decent soundsystem for the price of your budget here in Norway, if I worked a bit at it. You should be able to too. It won't impress anyone who's seen Pimp My Ride, but it would give you a more full sound image than what is delivered by the stock audio system. |

I put a cheap Sony headunit with usb and bluetooth in my 3door Rav4, bought a secondhand Eton MA 125.2 (class H) and took my god knows how old 6x9 Infinity Reference speakers. Amplifier and speakers in a shelf and ready. 3door Rav4 doesn't have much room in the back...
Together with the other standard speakers it sounds decent IMO, and still an awful lot better then my 10 speaker (incl subwoofer) premium suck system of my Accord.
O, that Eton MA 125.2 is funny, you'll all laugh when you see it, such a tiny amp it is... and it sounds great :) |
