seems AOL are canning winamp.
not sure what significance this has, or that it really matters... but it seems symbolic and strikes a chord.
i'm still using the old version with the classic base skin - before it turned into that browser monstrosity - i tried it once, but the EQ seemed way off, so i quickly reverted, if it ain't broke...
but after all these years, memories, and a good decade+ of trusty and reliable service (and more to come) i can safely say this legendary program... or 'app', as they may call it today... is the greatest EVER!
it begs the question - what does everyone else use to play their music?!
and why did AOL do this? i remember AOL bought it over from nullsoft ages ago. i guess they perfected the program. surely it will still be available for download, and if not, why not?!
is it not profitable? do they have a rival they want to replace it with? this is a bit of a travesty in any case.

Winamp for as long as I can remember probably within 1 year after the first release in 1997.
I use an add-on to be able to delete tracks from within Winamp, so I don't need the explorer (or Total Commander) for this.
Sad news :( |

It hasn't really been relevant for like a decade now, honestly.
Foobar is better for people looking for a more minimalistic player.
For the whole media suite thing: mediamonkey. It even uses a winamp player i believe and is compatible with the add-ons.
And then there's clementine as well. Which is also pretty great especially for different platforms. |

If by new and shiny you mean something that doesn't have a ghastly and impractical modular UI that looks like it came from an 80's sci-fi nightmare then yes.
And yes it does still play music files just fine if you consider that an achievement. |

| Winamp was like magic when I first downloaded it in 97. I think I held on to it up till like 2005, which was probably a little too long. |

it's a music player, what else do you want from it? it's a solid, gimmick-free workhorse.
there was an awesome mod community if you needed anything else, with no limit on imagination.
winamp went hand-in-hand with the rise of the MP3... and like napster. downloading vinyl rips on a 56k modem, good times :)
a true software for the peoples. |

better in your opinion... does the music output in a higher quality or something? :o
winamp probably paved the way for whatever it is you are talking about. i still use the classic version, which is many years old, so it can hardly be knocked for being 'out of date' - it is! if it was doing something wrong, or falling short somewhere, i'd upgrade.
you are probably one of those folk that car salesmen dream about, selling you stuff you didn't know you needed - how did you ever live without it!! :stongue: |

| I've still got it somewhere, but only because it plays FLAC. Generally I just use Spotify as an all-in-one player now. |
