So, it appears that I am joining a new Family!

Taking a job transfer into the area and will be moving this weekend.
The Wife is staying here in Sac for about a month or so while we sell the house here and I find us a place there.

We will be both be working in the South Bay...so I'd like to find a place in the area as well. Thinking as far down as Torrance.

Any thoughts or ideas about where to stay away from?? Anything helps!

Thanks...and while it maybe a bit of time before I'm out and about...can't to meet you all and tear it up on the floor!

El Segundo is nice place to raise a family. I don't know to much about about the city as I only work around there but it looks nice and safe.

Thanks! I will be working in El Segundo as well...and having spent a bit of time between there and Redondo, you are right. Some really nice spots.

Been contacting Realtors this week...so we will see.

Stay away from Compton of course :) The closer to the beach the better and more expensive. Torrance has some nice residential areas and a lot of commercial (almost every big store has presence). It has good public schools so it's more expensive than surrounding cities.

i know absolutely nothing about El Segundo other the route I get to work. And maybe the Ralphs Grocery store (btw... there is no Safeway in SoCal, everything's a Ralphs. Make sure to get a club card yo)

Can vouch for El Segundo. Just don't live under the paths of any planes.

Torrance is good too just have to live on the right sold - not old Torrance. I hate dealing with the street traffic (Hawthorne Blvd), but it does have Del Amo Mall (HUGE).

Manhattan Beach is another good spot.

I like Culver City. It's somewhat a reverse commute towards El Segundo as well. It's the location of it that's great. Near 405/10 exchange, so you are close to downtown , LAX, the beaches. Easier to get to the OC (405 has less traffic than the 5), the Hollywood clubs at night, etc. And once you know the area, you will learn how to slice through the streets to avoid highway traffic

Also, there are indeed Safeways in SoCal -- they just go by the names Pavilions and Vons down there. Pavilions are nicer inside, but both have the same sales and all. And your Safeway card will work at both.

Foods Co is also Ralphs aka Krogers, though it doesn't have the same sales.

When I was down over LDW, I was able to use my safeway card at the Ralphs in Hermosa.

@ DaveT: Torrance seems to be where the Wife wants to go, as it fits in the budget and there are some good neighborhoods (from what I've seen online). Sure it can be as pockety as Sacramento, so thanks for the stay on this side of the street call!!

Hadn't previously given any thought to Culver City...and based on your post will start looking there too. We will have some friends and family in RB and HB so would like to stay as close as we can...but far enough inland to be out of the madness.

Thanks Guys...this is exactly what I needed!

Even old Torrance has some nice residential spots between Carson Str. and Sepulveda for example. In general the closer to the beaches the better it is. Southwest Torrance is the nicest and most expensive but furthest from the freeways. North and central Torrance (where I live) are fine. One thing to note, east of Western Ave. is NOT Torrance; even though the addresses are Torrance, it belongs to LA. You probably don't want to live there, utilities are served by neighboring cities, LAPD response times are longer, some unsafe areas too like south of Carson Str. You obviously don't want to be close to the refinery. Lomita is also nice, especially its western side, you'll see a noticeable drop in prices because of the public school situation I was talking about. PM me for specific areas, I've lived in Torrance for ever.
