i agree with u...i try never to start stuff...but it does happen...because there are people who'll jus go into a thread and post stupid comments out of the blue...fine...i kno everyones got opinions...but to just post...your artist sux...and cuz u like him u suck too is pointless...
but whatever...i get used to just skippin those posts...hahaha... |

The problem, as I see it, is twofold.
First of all, you have the people who, when they encounter someone who has different taste in music, feel obligated to say that not only does their taste suck, but they must suck as well, or they wouldn't have such sucky taste.
These people, and they are depressingly common, are quite frankly nothing more than simpletons. They cannot comprehend the concept of 'taste' and instead degenerate the concept of musical preferences to a black and white, "it's either good or bad" notion. I, for one, wish they would all go jump off a cliff, but they aren't going to. What I think needs to happen is for the forum moderators to treat implicit personal attacks the same way they would treat explicit ones.
For example, suppose someone posts "I like X", and a few posts later, someone (who is not necessarily replying directly to them) posts "Hahaha that's cheese, only n00bs like X."
They may not have directly been calling the first person a newbie, but the effect is just as destructive. I believe that this is a source of a lot of the flaming that goes on around here.
The flipside of this is a disappointing level of severe oversensitivity. Some people, when something they like is described as being of poor quality by someone else, and they feel that that person has done an insufficient job of explaining their position, react as if the fact that another person has different taste is a personal attack upon themselves.
It is not reasonable to ask people to bite their tongues about things they don't like just to preserve the fragile musical egos of forum members who, for whatever reason, do not have the self-confidence to deal with people who simply do not agree with them. As long as these people can refrain from responding in an inflammatory way, this is not a problem. But many of them struggle to still their hands and accept that someone has a different point of view.
I have nothing against these people, because they cannot control the way they feel. But I would ask them to make an effort to be a little more cool-headed.
No matter how hard we try, we will never totally eliminate the problem of flaming on the forums. But by fostering respect for others' opinions, we can make them a much more enjoyable place for everyone.
Cheers,
Arbiter
EDIT: By the way, I'm going to start making use of the ignore list function of the forums to deal with people who are consistently inflammatory. I recommend other people do so as well. It would be great if, instead of flaming someone back, you just ignored them. If enough people would do this, flame wars would much less frequently get out of hand. |

I completely agree with U SmellsExcellent
But I can stand it when people flame or Oakey, or Tiesto, or Progressive. I hate it when they talk about music they know nothing of...
And I spit on those who always keep flaming every thread they come in.
Ok I admit I flamed sometimes but when I do this it's because I'm so sick of all this stupid comment everywhere, see some time to strike back :D
So on this one for all the mofo's who ever flamed one of the above three, PVD is the worst ing dj on the planet, his sets take u nowhere, his spinning style is cheese and his trackselecting is worser then Dj Jean's one...
:haha: :haha: :haha:
Remember guys it's my opinion so respect it :D |

Just kidding. I entirely agree with you - too many discussions that could have intelligent points just end up becoming flame wars. |

Arbiter.. if i read correctly, and maybe i didnt cuz im kinde rushed, but im not saying hold your tongue but explain yourself and your opinions... supportless claims/accusations are worthless and ultimately what start the flaming....
And, yeah, I know it won't be eliminated, it can't be because we all get pissed about someone else's opinion sometimes (KKK, HITLER, ETC) so in reality this whole think is kinda unrealistic but we can some something to keep all the useless arguments to a minimum.......

Mods aren't really the answer though, the community needs to be able to deal with issues internally, without constantly being having someone make sure that people are being polite and so forth.
Some people *are* out for blood, and some other people *are* too sensitive for that matter. What're the mods supposed to do? Block everyone? Close everything? They do what they can, but it's up to the normal users to moderate themselves, and *think* before making a post that could trigger a flame war.
As has been said, the Ignore button is a wonderful feature, and an easy way to make the site entirely more enjoyable. |

I agree that it would be preferable if people would give reasons why they don't like something, rather than simply stating that they don't like it. Sometimes, it's kind of hard to describe what about a tune you don't like, though - at least it would be difficult to provide an explaination that would satisfy someone who really liked it.
I agree with you on basically all of your points, though, to be honest. The only difference as I see it is that I don't expect people to always be able to verbalize their reasons for disliking something, although I'll grant you that many times people have reasons and their failure to add them to the conversation tends to result in flaming. |

Flaming eh
Topic..i'm an expert on....rofl
Actually i'm trying not to flame ppl as often. See the difference is that i will tell you why i hate a dj for some reason but with tiesto and pvd....i'm still big fans. I'll tell you why i don't like that set or that mix but i still like tiesto (fell off for a while ago) and pvd (has'nt been playing the best sets lately). I've seen them both live and they both rock. I'm trying.....mods are also trying. |

and again, heres where my whole position gets sticky... when someone doesn't like a song "just because" its obviously just personal preference and that can't be changed and sometimes can't be explained. But, goign back to my original post, peeps just gotta accept that we're all different.
-Marc
Oh, and Davinox, Cool if you dont like him but this isn't really the thread to express that opinion of yours.....
