Just have some quick notes about 2013. I was in Korea for the first few months, so missed anything until April.
Have to agree that Toronto has it really good for EDM...the bookings we get are incredible and it only got better for 2013. Just wish the underground acts we love weren't relegated to small venues and played in bigger spots that are capable of larger scale lighting and effects but that's just how it is.
Good stuff:
-Places like Cabal...Loved the homey feeling of the staff and the comfy vibe of the place. Everyone was welcoming when I saw Tigerskin there.
-Ryze is sick too...looks so much better than Moskito, love the new design. Good to have at least a medium sized place to see DJs.
-Footwork closing down. Despite their crazy bookings. I never liked this place's door policy. I disliked the staff and the place itself is not designed that well. It remains to be seen what happens at Coda, but since Coda is bigger I'm assuming they won't keep their douchy door policy.
- Electric Island and festivals like Brrr! starting up.
Bad stuff:
-Cover for some events are getting out of control
I think to further solidify us being number 1 for EDM, we should hope to bring some DJs that don't come here often (Luciano, Ricardo Villalobos, Sven Vath are just a few). It's gonna be interesting to see how Coda changes the scene (if at all) but I'm happy there more mid-large venues opening up. We should definitely welcome more production value with the music we listen to but I feel some folks are opposed to it cuz it might make things "cheesy" but I say bring it on. |

I didn't go out much in ottawa this year - we've had a bunch of acts, but nothing like toronto - the ottawa scene is fractured into the dubstep and dnb community and a couple of clubs (that bring in Toronto locals but no real headliners - although we did have Umek in this year)....but the ottawa scene is hurting overall - nothing 'mature' - just kids (which I don't mind, but the music they listen to is all dubstep and electro - wtf)...
hopefully back to Toronto soon..

I'm gutted to have missed Ceephax Acid Crew in Kensington Market in November. Other than that, all the best musical moments I experienced last year were on the soundsystem in our basement, like so:
What can I say? Toronto's current club culture just doesn't appeal to me. If there was more of this in the city...
...I might be more inclined to go out.
Toronto has its flavour, and plays it rather safe when it comes to bookings. A lot of people seem to dig it, so I'm just the odd man out.

Hahah...thanks for the suggestion, but I've been dancing and DJing in Toronto since the 1980s - pretty sure my tastes are sufficiently broad at this point.
I could just as easily say that if Toronto opened up its tastes the tiniest bit, it could easily accommodate the likes of Traxx, who at one point was hugely popular in this city's Techno/House scene. Check that set I posted, and point me in the direction of someone who's come through here who plays in even a remotely similar vein. There are a slew of artists out there who are really pushing the musical envelope that will never be heard by Toronto audiences, unless they travel to other parts of the globe.
I don't find the majority of DJs and PAs who roll through town to be cutting edge at all - in fact, I'd venture to say that to a certain extent, Toronto has a fairly distinct sound when it comes to electronic music, and as I mentioned previously, it's a rather safe one, at least by my standards. Big Boss was correct in stating that New York is considerably more progressive in its bookings than Toronto.
Lest anyone feels this is an anti-Toronto rant, I'm actually o.k. with the way things are here at this point. While I still love to both dance and play music, it isn't nearly as central to my life as it used to be. When I write about my perceptions of Toronto's nightlife these days, it's more observation than complaint. |

Not to derail the thread, but:
Melvin has served as a huge inspiration, ever since I first heard him throw down alongside Marco Carola and Neil Landstrumm at the Masonic Temple in 1998. He's the DJ's equivalent of Lee Perry. I can't think of any other DJ who's absolutely blown my mind on so many occasions. |
