Came across a channel on youtube that has animated scores for classical pieces. For me, seeing the music represented visually note by note while the music is playing is nice for insight into music writing.
Here is Brahms, Piano Quartet, opus 60, movement 1:

| I think the shapes are to distinguish the different parts (and look more interesting to the viewer). |
