Yeah, the oscilliscope shots imply that the Roland dorks are meticulously modeling every nuance of the 808 to bring you the perfect digital emulation.
^^^and that's probably what some of the marketing fluff will say.
Anyway, screenshot time:

'We developed the TR-808 in 1980, at that time electronic music and dance did not exist'
Erm yes, it did.
Anyhoo if it's got decent converters, individual outs and is less than £400-500 I'd be interested.
Well, in the 909 version anyway. |

The more I look at it, the more I'm expecting it to be more Maschine-like in concept. There's not enough controls or a screen for it to be a standalone drum synth, it looks very Maschine-like in build, and the controls seem to be very generic. Also, the vid shows it sitting in front of a computer in every shot IIRC. I'm thinking that Roland will roll out AIRA as a series of x0x-emulating plugins that are all controlled by this one controller. Just a hunch. |

Your probably right, looks more like a daw controller than anything else.

That would be a massive, massive fail tbh.
The fact that it has a fader per drum leads me to suspect that it cannot be just a midi controller.
Also, the originals didn't have a screen, neither does a Nord Lead etc etc.
It would be quite refreshing not to have a screen tbh! |

It's at least digital, the buttons on the left read BANK SELECT
Question remains VA standalone, or MASCHINE type dongle. |

I agree that it'll be VA, although that doesn't bother me. It's workflow that I care about now and like you I like knob per function. If these are cool little recreations with a simple UI they'll sell like hotcakes (think Minibrute etc, which also doesn't have a screen).
If they are dongles, then Roland should deservedly go bust in a cloud of purple shame. |

For now still happy with my Tempest, Miami and Mbase_11 but we'll see
If it's going to be anything as the JP8080 of the drumcomputers i might be game :D
If it needs a computer i can't use it :D |

I don't think it would be a fail at all (other than for the gearslutz crowd praying incessantly for Roland to go back 3 decades). Look at the success of Maschine - the majority of the market are ITB and definitely aren't looking to spend $3-4K on an analog drum machine or even $1K on a VA one. I just don't see Roland ever doing it. The new Jupiters, Junos, etc. I can see because they're designed for live performance, but the AIRA controller definitely looks like it's designed for the studio. |
