quote:
A native of Hollland, DJ Tiësto (Tijs Verwest) found his DJ calling at the age of eight. Starting out by playing records at drive-in disco shows, Tiesto is now a common name in dance music circles. His productions and talent was first discovered by Basic Beat Recordings, which enabled Tiesto to create his own creative sound. He quikly put out his first mixed series, entitled Forbidden Paradise. Shortly after that, he formed his record label, Black Hole Recordings and released his own Magik CD series.

CP: Here in America, what’s your favorite place to play in?

T: I love a lot of places over there; it’s hard to pick just one. But, Miami is always good and Montreal, LA, San Francisco-Spundae.

CP: You are doing a lot more remixes for commercial songs. Is that aimed at breaking boundaries with dance music?

T: I first have to like the song but it is a challenge and it gives my music exposure worldwide. For example, with Dave Matthews, I remixed a rock song and made it dance. It opens it up to another audience. People are learning about this music, I feel that in America that it’s more underground and new territory and in the UK it’s commercial.

CP: Elaborate more on the “In Search of Sunrise” series.

T: The track selection is the best tracks of the year, I want you to be able to listen to it in the car for when you go the holiday or you are going out. It’s something to listen to anytime.

CP: Going back to your early partnership with Ferry Corsten, tell me what happened with Gouryella?

T: Well both our careers were taking off. Ferry is more of the producer than I was and was more noticed in magazines. He then went to System F and Gouryella was neglected by both of us. We didn’t get to make any tracks together. After that my first album was finished and I started to promote it. We are still friends, we just didn’t have the time.

CP: I’d say your style used to be more trancey, do you agree?

T: I think it’s more obvious that I’m breaking away from trance. I was playing a lot more ambient but now I have started a new beginning. I believe “Flight 643” was my breaking period for that, its not just trancy but is techy. There’s even a dub of it with Kosheen’s, “Hide U.”

CP: how did you feel about Club Exit while you were in NYC?

T: Honestly, it was a bit dark inside, I hope NYC finds a new club. I want it to be a refreshing experience when I come the next time.

CP: How did you like the Area Two tour?

T: I really enjoyed it. I have never played this early before especially in the states. Good crowd, I really enjoyed it.

CP: How does it compare to other festivals in the UK like Global Gathering?

T: Well, Global Gathering’s much more massive. It’s like 36,000 people. But that’s good because when it’s more intimate and I can play more relaxed. I think the crowd was on the same level as me.

CP: We’ve heard rumors that Cream in the UK is going to shut down. Is this going to affect your residency at Cream-Amnesia in Ibiza?

T: No, that’s the strongest party in Ibiza that’s not going to be affected. I play there with PVD.

CP: What does the future hold for you?

T: Well, I don’t know what I’m doing the next six months or six years. The only thing I know for now is I enjoy what I am doing. It’s hard to say. I hope the future brings a lot of joy. But I’m coming back to America after this tour and I’m booked till the 30th of December.
