i want to open a disscusion here about what Sci Fi is...
since basicly most people consider any movie with involvment of space or future as sci fi but many times a movie that does have one of those isn't much fictional or has any consetraion on science,
i'll give you an examples of what i'm talking about:
Terminator 1-2 were great movies, and it has a complication of times, but both movies are much more focused about the action, i mean, in terminator 2 there's only few parts showing any fictional events and so on and the rest is the that liquid robot chasing arnold and the connors, therefor i consider it more of an action movie.

alien 1 was a sci fi movie since most of the movie it is consentrates on the life of the alien and it's development more than how it kills the entire crew and even then you learn about the alien. although alien 2 was totaly different, they have a mission to screw all the aliens, so they come to that planet and most of the movie is focused how they kick the alien's ass (or the aliens kick theirs) and except some advanced guns and ships it's nothing more than a futuristic action movie.

event horizon, sci fi or horror (or both) i haven't decided yet, so yes it has many fictional parts for example their research of what happend to the old crew and the ship, where it's been and so on, but it has many elements of a horror movie too, all the blood scenes and so on.

Starship Tropers, do i even need to speak? besides the fact that it's a stupid movie in my opinion it's a totally action movie, so yey they find the master bug brain in the end, but except that its just shoting all day long.

and the list continues

so my question: is Sci Fi just a name for a futuristic action movie or is everybody wrong about their definition ?

hmm...just saw disney's atlantis the other week :D:D:D

i really enjoyed it LOL

some damn sweet animation there, also spriggan i watched as well...but for some reason i was more interested in atlantis...weird 'cos i've always been a bit of an anime fan and never thought much of the disney titles :p
Munken

I'm starting to feel like I have semi-obscure taste here...

- Dark City
- The City of Lost Children
- Lain (anime)
- 12 Monkeys (MINT!)
- Ghost in the Shell (anime, not obscure :p )
- Blade Runner (also not vaguely obscure)
- Strange Days
- Matrix (actually is action/sci-fi, but I digress)

I particularly recommend the first two.

Dark City is faintly known by sci-fi fans, but the City of Lost Children has to be one of the least appreciated modern sci-fi films in existence...it has lush visuals, a great story, and everything I look for in a good movie.
Astronaut
3 favs in this order:
2001: a space odyssey
Planet of the apes (the original of course)
Alien

three classic movies - no doubt

Right on man... it's nice to know I'm not the only one who knows these movies, especially City of Lost Children.

5th Element
Dune (the original w/ Patrick Stewart and Sting, not the ty TMN remake)
The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai Across the 8th Dimension
The Empire Strikes Back
Ice Pirates (space adventure film)
