| Quite pleasant, but a little bit standard blogbient with added muffled techno thump for me. |

Laptop producers? |

Yeah, when I was writing my blog I used the terms "laptop ambient" and "blogbient" interchangeably. At the time I was reviewing a -load of ambient stuff and found absolutely loads of it online, often being given away for free and reviewed on numerous hipster-y blogs. These producers would release dozens of samey-sounding albums all of which seemed to be made by time-stretched, processing and looping a few samples on a laptop, giving you that morphine-dream sound that's also present on this album. Very pleasant but with a scarcity of real ideas or anything memorable.
This Earthen Sea record just reminds me of all those records I was listening to, albeit with an undercooked techno beat beneath it all. The way the tracks seem to suddenly, almost randomly, end adds to the sense of no real structural idea or attention to form. Again, it sounds nice but there's just so much stuff of this ilk being made it's hard to get excited about any individual album. |
