LA Scene Dull Lately ???

Maybe I'm just being a jaded old fart like Mister Party Animal, but I really haven't found a whole lot to be excited about here in Los Angeles for the past few months. Even some of the more appealing bookings have felt like a whole lot of the same thing. You might be wondering "how can the LA scene be dull - look at how full the event listing here is!?". that. We've let that go on for far too long. Yeah, LATA is definitely dying a natural death, but the hundreds of attempts to accelerate that process through suffocation are so unseemly.
I'll concede that my tastes have changed (and that they haven't changed in the same direction the music has), but I still can't shake the feeling I get every time I visit RA from a different PC and am confronted by event listings for NYC - it isn't so much jealousy as it is abject despair. Music was one of the things that really tied me to Los Angeles. I'd catch up with friends, they'd tell me who they saw over the weekend, and I'd have a counter: "well we had so-and-so out here and it was fantastic; they'll be your way soon enough if you're lucky."
As for my tastes currently, I'll say this: there was a party on the docket about three months ago featuring Recondite. It was cancelled, but I was absolutely giddy about that one prior to the cancellation. Last year when somebody brought DJ Sprinkles out, it was a huge party night (4 big parties aside from the Sprinkles one) and the crowd was basically nonexistent, so I recognize that he won't be back around anytime soon (if ever), but that's my .
Most weekends, I'm happier to sit home playing records and drinking wine...
So - I guess my questions are:
Are any of you having similar experiences?
Is there something I'm missing?
Where do we go from here, friends? |

I/We rarely go out anymore. All the parties suck. If there is a good artist in town, I know that his/her set won't be anything special. Only big reason we do go out to see certain artist is because we'll happen to run in to some cool friends.
I've always felt that although LA brings a lot of talent, the parties and music tend to suck. Horrible crowd and a sorry ass set. I'd rather see these folks in another city. A city that actually appreciates the artist as opposed to just being there. I'm kind of speaking out of my ass b/c I'm still hung over though ;)
I blame the YOLO generation! :) |

we do get the talent but the over crowded clubs and "kids" just being there not knowing who is there makes for a not so fun night. I don't like to educate at a club. I'll educate at a rave but not a club.
on that note, we are hitting up concerts more so than clubs these days. |

| having moved to NYC 9 months ago ill say this. NYC bookings, crowd, and events on what we get in LA. Output alone out does all of LA then you add all the other amazing weekly events and you realize how pathetic LA scene is |

i'm not doubting you, but i am curious about the disparity between the two scenes. what does NYC have that we don't have? (aside from the later alcohol hours and transportation) |

aside from those, two things: 1) nyc is closer to europe, so it's cheaper to bring over some of the guys from there, and 2) the demand in LA still seems to be primarily for EDM and big room house, rather than for the types of parties you'll see on the NYTA board. don't get me wrong though, LA still has a good scene... NY is just killing it right now. |

I was reading this article in the New Yorker recently where they actually talked about the Berlin techno scene--well, about Berghain, at least--and they quoted some well known guy in the scene as comparing EDM to fascism. I thought it was hilarious lol |

| NYC > la. First visit ever earlier this month, NYC beats la hands down in every department. La is where you stop off for a burger on your way to San Francisco or San Diego. |

SF club scene started getting crushed in 2001-2002, LA followed in 2003-2004. New York (and Miami) was the hot at that moment.
Then even NYC started suffering. Miami, too.
SF club scene has been suffering for a good 3+ years -- now LA is following suit it seems. other places will follow.
It goes in cycles.
Sad part is a lot of the new kids showing up think the scene has "exploded" -- maybe it has, but clubs out here are suffering as everything is so big-event to massive minded.
A huge, huge bubble is forming and about to pop.
