making a major move

OK, so I just recently visited Berlin and fell in love with it. So much so now that I'm considering packing up my bags and making a move there. I mean, I'm not in a relationship anymore, I can get Polish citizenship with a bit of prudent paperwork and patience, and I have freelance job prospects in the meantime. I've always had this feeling of wanting to travel the world and bounce around for a bit but my relationship status kept me from doing so. Now, as a single dude, I have the freedom. I guess now it's a matter of leaving behind America and taking a leap of faith.
With that said, anyone here completely packed up, jumped ship, and gone on this kind of adventure for a long period of time in their life? |

I went backpacking all over Europe for 3 years when I was 19/20/21. Hands down the best thing I could have ever done for myself. If you have the opportunity to travel, ing take it. |

Wow must have been a pretty bad breakup to send you running to another continent. Want to tell us about it? |

do it man, you're still young. I've acquired Euro Passport and plan on getting married in Barcelona with my partner who has never left the states.
My business is based in Delaware, but our SaaS model allows me to operate anywhere. |

sounds amazing. can I ask how you afforded it? a couple of months I get, but 3 years? you must've worked little odd jobs or something yes? otherwise perhaps a student?
doing the whole backpacking thing is something that i've always wished i did. it just didn't come together. i'd like to still get around to it someday, but honestly i've got a really nice job (which ironically would allow me to finally afford something like that) and i don't know if i'll ever get the opportunity for a long extended trip like that. maybe a month or so, which i would still be happy with. |

I started out with some money saved up from home here, but yep, I worked all over the place. Mostly in the UK because, as an Australian, I could get a working holiday visa there. The general idea was to work for a few months in one city, explore the surrounding areas while saving up some cash (the UK is super easy to explore because it's so small), and then heading out to Europe somewhere for as long as the cash would last. I managed a trip to South Africa for 2 months as well. Rinse, repeat for 3 years. I did get a few under-the-table jobs in countries I wasn't supposed to be working in, but those weren't so common. Mainly just doing bits and pieces of work in hostels and so forth. |

What would you say was the biggest takeaway from this experience?
How much of an impact has it had on your life since, would you say? |

I do 1 month a year backpacking through europe. I am in the same position where my job and finances doesn't allow me to just get up and take off for longger than a month. However, Im totally jealous about you getting up to move to Berlin. I love berlin so much. Classy by day grimy and crazy by night.
What keeps me in this concrete hole that is toronto is my family. It sucks being raised from such an amazing group of loyal people. I reall don't want to miss a minute of their company. Especially now that my parents are older and I'm watching my aunts and uncles health deteriorate. I really can't see myself leaving them when they need me most. |
