Enter, stage north
Construction begins on mammoth new film studio
By CHRIS DOUCETTE -- Toronto Sun
TORONTO -- It was lights, camera, and all action in "Hollywood North" yesterday.
A ground-breaking ceremony in the city's portlands area set the stage for what will become one of the largest studio complexes in the world, entrenching Toronto's place on the international movie-making scene.
"It's really going to be the missing link to what the industry has been lacking," said Paul Bronfman, president and CEO of Comweb Group.
Bronfman joined forces with Paul Vaughan, president and CEO of Studios of America, last spring to create Great Lakes Studios Toronto.
Great Lakes Studios will lease the former Richard L. Hearn Thermal Generating plant on Unwin Ave. for at least the next 30 years from Ontario Power Generation.
7,500 JOBS
The company says it anticipates the enormous complex, situated on 27 acres of real estate along the city's eastern waterfront, will attract $500 million annually to the local and provincial economies and create about 7,500 jobs.
The old power plant will be partially gutted to make way for, among other things, the world's largest effects stage and more than a dozen film stages.
The transformation, pegged at $100 million and expected to be completed in 2004, will allow projects larger than Titanic to be filmed entirely within the complex.
Canadian film director Norman Jewison and provincial Innovation Minister David Turnbull also attended the ceremony.
Ontario already had an attractive city in which to film and lower taxes, Turnbull said, but not having a big enough facility to film large-scale indoor scenes has been a deterrent for movie makers in the past.
"This is the piece that was missing," he said.
Plans for another colossal film studio in the portlands area were announced in February. Construction for that project, almost twice the size of Great Lakes Studios, is scheduled to begin next year.
