is the orchestral string dead?

i was watching the mindblowing science series with professor BC, and its magnificent theme struck me.

i looked into it to see who done it, as i knew darren tate has done stuff like this for the BBC, but it wasn't him... anyway it seems there is no place for orchestral strings in todays climate, with trance as we know it dead, i loved how trance was dance music fused with classical elements.

but now, beeps and farts fill in where the once majestic, and even camp string once played.

maybe some older-style new house tracks may have some strings, but that's all i can think of :(

back in the day, i was a sucker for stuff like strings for yasmin (matt darey mix)

Trance is and has always been modern classical. It's all based on simple yet somehow complex harmonies, rhythms and melodies and let's be frank, how damn easy is it to turn a classical song into a trance tune? Killerloop vs John B Norman - Chi Mai, Tiesto - Athena, William Orbit - Adagio For Strings, Gouryella - Tenshi, Rank 1 - Sensation Anthem 2003, Fire & Ice - Souvenir De Chine, the list goes on and on...hell, swedish group Van made an entire album based around this concept.
In the very least, I believe orchestras are irreplaceable as far as film scores go, so in this aspect classical (though a blanket term of course) music will remain very much alive.

Maybe something like this?

yep, i was talking 'dead' within the confines of dance music. we know that the examples you have given come from a specific strain of trance that is done.

even hybrid, an orchestral strings champion is churning out pretty dire and drab dry tech-house type tracks :nervous:

Here:

As for trance being the new classical, I think Simon Reynolds said it best when he described Euro trance as "the enchanted flutter of a lobotomised Philip Glass."
Floorfiller
so why don't you make a trance song that has string in it?
The Rattler
I put 4 tracks with orchestral strings in this mix I made

Symphonic Melodic by J-Zed on Mixcloud

Not trance, but deep & tech house.

No it's not dead, now get off your duff and find me some choons.

This track from the new Digital Blonde EP is pretty good. Nice haunting strings.

I like Simon, but I always thought he was a bit bitter over Grime's failure to take off and he took it out on a lot of other electronic music genres.

He's always been very genre-political and a lot of it comes across as quite forced and silly when you read back. His evisceration of trance and prog in the updated version of Energy Flash is very funny though, and more than a little accurate.
