Question about panning

| How to give some sounds nice fat panning stereo, that is making them sound as if separated in both speakers? I know different FX (like chorus) or built-in FX in VSTs (like Pan Separation in FM8 or Dimension Expander in Massive) can add to this, layering sounds can certainly help or a Stereo Separation FX in FL Studio for example which almost gives the result I want to achieve. But when I listen to professional bass lines or claps they sound much richer and equally in both speakers. Any tips how to achieve this? Thanks. |

You will want to hard pan two instances of a mono sound, one left and one right. Then add a short delay to one of those channels, something between 1-35 milliseconds. Once you start using longer delay times than this the ears perceive two discrete sounds which is not what you want.
This psychoacoustic phenomenon is called the HAAS effect and is defined by the way our ears perceive and localise sounds in space around us. |

I suppose this mostly relates to claps right? how about bass lines? I doubt they split monos to make them sound richer. Please take a listen to Oceanlab's if I Could Fly, can you hear the bassline is very deep and rich?

| You could also try a doubler or a stereo widener. Look in to m/s processing as well. One thing that I will advise when trying to get this effect on the bass is to NOT try to process the entire frequency spectrum of the bass. Split it so that you're widening only the midrange and higher frequencies. Leave the lower frequencies in mono. Many processors designed to get a stereo widening effect have this functionality built in. |

| For bass, add some unison on full spread, then roll off below 200-300hz on the side channel. When doing M/S EQ, you generally want to use the more conservative slopes of around -6db/oct. |

use wide LR pan like a 30L 30R, for claps...use a two-hit clap, one that just slightly precedes the other one...double up the clap layer, use a slight random pan lfo on each clap. create a delay that is slightly out of sync on L R
oh yea, and add a mid/low tom hit to the clap chain....low pass it. |
