I am doing this from the left-hand side file explorer, I can expand the .ALS project file and see all the midi and audio tracks but I cant drag them as I've read is possible and thought it was a great option, any ideas?

Are you waiting 1 or 2 secs before dropping? You have to wait and then you will see the mouse pointer change, then you can drop the track in

copy & paste the channel from project a) to b)

Spot on.. Yes click and hold before releasing, it can take a few seconds to do so :)

I dont think that is it you guys...
Before I got ableton 9 legitimately I had used a cracked version of Live 8. This happened to me using 8 all the time...I thought it was a resource issue. Ableton essentially locked any thing from being taken from the library or any other file from the index. At times, I couldnt even move a midi or wav file in the timeline. But the remedy was to just save your work...then x out,re boot and it worked fine.
Using 9 now, I have had that happen 0 times, and this is not a cracked version.

Side note..I would also make sure your audio files you are wanting to use are indeed in the location they are supposed to. I have also seen times where one has a audio folder on their local drive and they run a search through ableton's places index and then they move files for whatever reason and ableton still recognizes the original destination in the index but obviously there is nothing there because it is now located in a different folder.

The fact its a crack or not wont matter.. I used to have the same problem draging channel strips over from the browser from previous projects to the one I had open but like evo says for some reason you have to click and hold it for a few seconds then the cursor will change and you can then drop it in the arrangement window and it will load up that track/channel. Alternatively you can drag channel strips to the browser to save them all in one place so they're at hand to easily import them rather than having to browse through a load of old projects everytime you're after something.
