Please, DO NOT "Decline Your Vote" On Election Day

Ontario Elections are taking place tomorrow. There's been a "decline your vote" campaign that's been creeping around the 'net as of recent, which purports the want to send a message to all three parties, that none of them are worth voting for.

Not so fast. Turns out that it's yet another sleazy, underhanded PC tactic designed to discourage voting, period:

Food for thought. And please, get your ass out there and cast a ballot tomorrow.

Regardless, and as pointed out in that Vice piece, it's still a dumb idea. This year, for the first time, I'm voting Green. The mere fact that they've been excluded from debates, even though they're polling at around 6%, shows that the three major parties are at least somewhat afraid of what they bring to the table. Their environmental and socially-conscious platform aside, I'm also enamoured of their plan to merge Ontario Catholic School Boards with the public one. Why ANY religious group should receive public funding, particularly for education, is beyond me.

But if Quebec and Newfoundland got rid of their antiquated systems, Ontario should as well.

What's the rationale behind this? Are PC supporters generally less apathetic than supporters of other parties?

From the Vice piece ht linked to:

Many opponents of the Decline Your Vote campaign are arguing that by influencing people to negate their ballot, they’re actually helping the Conservatives, who they say do well in elections where few people turn up to the polls. This is not exactly a very scientific approach to voter turnout, but there is some basis to it. Kinda.

In 2011, when the Tories took a majority federal government, low voter turnout was attributed to their victory because—according to a political scientist at the University of Ottawa—”low turnout usually favours the government, while a high turnout usually favours the opposition.” So, in this case, a low turnout would favour the Liberals. There is also an argument to be made, however, that young people and minority groups, who are more likely to vote Liberal or NDP and less likely to hit the polls, could therefore have a positive impact on the Conservatives (through their absence) in an election with low voter turnout.

Was up to 51%, which still sucks, but at least it's up from 48%.
