Should I buy a portable recorder?

I'm thinking to buy one (Zoom H1 V2, for example) to mainly record voices. But is it really necessary? Will I be able to record my own voice professionally for tracks?

REcording professionally is 95% technique and 5% equipment.

Do you need portability? Do you already have and audio interface with XLR and phantom power?
Microlab
What I only need is as much quality as possible for budget investment.

iPad, USB mic

Ipad just has so much more to it.sure it's more I guess but I mean one is a recorder, the other is well a lot. The apogee one built in mic is fantastic.

So it's possible to get a clean, background noise free quality with just an iPad?
Looney4Clooney
your mic is going to pick up more background noise than your ipad

you can add to the ipad. It is better spent , you can use it for so many things. Those portable reccorders cost 300$. And ipad and mic is 500.

If you are not doing any kind of field recording your money is better spent elsewhere. No need for a portable recorder when you could get a cheap audio interface with 48V phantom power and a decent condenser mic.

If you plan on eventually doing field recording you could knock out audio interface and recorder in one purchase with a Zoom H5 or H6.

if you dont want background noise you have to find a quiet place to record in..i think thats the most important....:)

do you want one?

If you are looking for sound that you can use as vocals on track the answer is no, don't buy that one. Zoom might have ok mics comparing to other portable recorders, but the quality of the sound isn't enough for professional recordings. It might do the job for demoing if that's what you're looking for. As told above, an audio interface + condenser mic (48v phantom) is good (and cheap) recording solution for almost any instrument, including vocals, if you have computer and DAW.

I agree with clooney,

an iphone/ipad and irig is what i'd get.

most of the vocals I got sent back in the day (and it was a long time ago) were noisey, badly recorded things: they polished up well in the mix.

SONY PCM D50

for field recording stuff is brilliant.... they apprecated in value tho... tough to find one less than 700
