Figured I'd take a break from my healthcare ethics paper that's due at midnight and post some music-related thoughts that have been on my mind lately...
1. there's been a lot of underground (for lack of a better term) DJs and fans posting about how they hate the EDM crowds, how the music is bull, yada yada etc blah blah. Case in point, google the piece that Seth Troxler did. He makes a point in that piece about how it's so amazing that weird s in a place like Berghain eat each other's s but then goes on to say that a girl snorting coke off some other girl's twat at a festival is disgusting. Get off your high horse. Not everyone is a music nerd nor does everyone aspire to become one -- let the masses enjoy their festivals and EDM shows. If you don't like it don't go to it.
2. there is no hierarchy of "levels" of music, especially that of the non-EDM variety. I simply will never be enamored with the Innervisions sound. Some of it is appealing to me, most of it isn't, and yes I get it. Doesn't mean I have bad taste...and vice versa, it doesn't meant that someone who doesn't like tech-house too much has bad taste either. We like different styles of music for different reasons, but most of it has to do with personality. I see/hear a lot of people talk about how such&such label/DJ/sound is the "next level" but what the hell does that mean? Me -- I like driving, somewhat fast-paced tech-house and melodic techno that gets me moving. Give me a lively party with people (meaning somewhat of a decent guy/girl ratio) getting down on the floor.
3. I wish progressive house would make a real comeback. 's dope. Everytime I play an old Global underground CD for people, I get at least one compliment on the music choice -- and this usually from people that don't listen to "underground" electronic music. While we're at it, more tribal house please.
4. To the promoters doing the Tier shows: keep it up! Thought they did a great job for the Cocodrills show last week, place felt NOTHING like it usually does for the EDM stuff they do. They didn't pass out the neon-light changing-colors foam things, lighting was good, nothing was overboard (except for their VIP bottle presentation...). Good vibe. Good crowd. And it was busy -- hoping to see more shows.
5. Why are there 6 other DJs listed on the Paul Ritch show at the Kennedy? W.t.f. Major letdown. Nobody gives a about any of those clowns on the bill. Nobody. Except their boys and girlfriends. |
