Linear Percussive Progression (tech trance(?) for 2014)

I honestly never thought I'd do another dancefloor related mix at this point unless it was in front of an audience. After listening to montana's fantastic tech trance mix for the TA Genre Challenge (http://www.tranceaddict.com/forums/...66#post10828766) again, however, I became inspired. I wanted to try out the same approach, just with new(ish) tunes instead of the Jamez/Oliver Lieb-era type of tunes that he had already covered with that mix.
The result is a mix straddling the grey area between techno and trance that is perhaps my favourite for dancefloor mixing more than ever before. I've also tried to make this a much more linear mix than my usual "build up-peak-break down" affair (though some tension and release has to be present for a mix not to be unbearably boring, in my book). Finally, the BPM hovers around 130 throughout, another big change for my mixes thus far. If you're looking for peaks and valleys with melodies in your trance sets, this isn't it. If you love percussion and listening intently, however, I think you'll get a lot out of this one. Enjoy!

In America Mixcloud has blanket music licences with SoundExchange, ASCAP, BMI & SESAC.
These licences stipulate certain rules around how you can listen to a service like Mixcloud:
- The tracklist must be hidden until you hear it
As music lovers ourselves, we understand that this may be frustrating at times, and we hope that in the future the rules will evolve to be more open to new types of services like Mixcloud.
In the meantime, Mixcloud is committed to providing a fully licensed and legal service so you can continue to discover and buy new music through listening to DJ mixes and radio shows. |
I feel discriminated. |

| Oh, for 's sake. As if I didn't have enough of a pet peeve with people not posting tracklists on their own. I added an old fashioned TL to the original post now. |

I felt that I had to take a listen to this since I don't remember many cases of anyone using one of my mixes as a guide/inspiration.
Yeah, I really liked this mix and it was the perfect mesh of trance and techno with heavy emphasis on the groove. Apart from from the first tune and Eye Walls "Bad Deal" I didn't know any of the tracks and that's always a good thing but then again I haven't really dug on-line for this kind of material in a long long time.
But the Jonas Kopp tune was a highlight and probably meant as a key point of the mix. Which brings me to what also made this mix great and that is the programming. I like the linear approach for these kind of tracks as it plays brilliantly when putting the focus on the groove and not peaks.
I'm going to listen a couple of more times to this and especially not on a Sunday evening/night. Cheers mate. |

You could just use the soundcloud downloader. Works with most streams.

| I listened to this yesterday, and it was definitely badass. Seems like you were aiming for a high level of activity and variety with your tech-trance. Admittedly, I was preparing myself for disappointment when the energy was declining after the first 70ish minutes. It seemed quite clear that you had peaked 3/4 of the way through and wanted to ease the set down to finish, as Nuclear Ramjet - Atomic Empire seemed significantly more relaxed than the rest, but I was quite surprised to find that you ramped it back up for the last three tracks! The flow definitely worked, but it was not quite as linear as the title or your description was indicating. In my mind, I see linear as a straightforward progression all the way through, but here you peaked midway, slowly lowered the energy and then brought it back up slightly at the end. I find that flow to be perfect for what you were trying to do, but I suppose at this point I'm just discussing semantics. It was a really nice road trip mix, and I hope I see you posting here more :) Thanks for the music, Jan. |

Thanks to everyone who checked this out so far, despite all the Mixcloud hassle. Here's a Mediafire link for those struggling with the Mixcloud stream. Should have put this up sooner, but the weather has just been so ridiculously good that I've been too busy lying around outside.

Yeah, Atomic Empire did give the mix a bit of a lull, which wasn't part of the plan. I decided to compensate for that with the remaining tunes instead of just stopping and doing the mix all over again, as I felt the mix would be a lot more organic and spontaneous that way. This is why the pace bounces back right afterwards.

This was more or less what I was trying to explain in the blurb for my first post. It was never my intention to make a completely linear mix in the strictest sense of the term, as that wouldn't be very interesting to me (hence the comment about some tension and release). The goal was to change up the "gradually increase the tempo and intensity to a peak and then cool off" type of formula that I've perused so often for my trance mixes. It was tricky, because if you are going to include some tension and release in your mix, when do you cross the threshold into familiar "build up and peak" territory, and how do you avoid getting to that point?
I feel like I've managed to find a decent middle road, where the constant BPM and the percussive differences between the tracks give the mix the progression yet linearity I wanted, without resorting to carefully placed breakdowns, melodies and so on, like I have done in the past. That said, tunes like Atomic Empire and Inland definitely provide a certain release of tension that could be taken as "peaks", so... I guess you all will have to be the judges on whether it works like I feel it does or not.
Anyway, enough nerding out about set structure. Glad to hear you liked the mix, and it's good to see that I'm not alone in thinking that it is an ideal road trip soundtrack. |
