Cleaning vinyl records DIY

Halp please. I've looked at multiple things on the internet, all with different methods, people saying one method is bad, people saying one method is good, etc. Lots of misinformation out there.

I have a carbon-fibre brush that I use regularly for quick dust removal but for a proper clean, especially after a few gigs of play (fingerprints, etc), what method do you guys use?

I know not to use any glass-cleaner because it has ammonia, and apparently ammonia is a 100% no-no on vinyl. Also vinegar appears to be bad for them.

I came across a few people saying a tiny amount of Dawn dish soap, warm distilled water works and is okay for the records? I dno though with the amount of bull happening on the internet I'd like to get your opinions or methods that YOU use.

A blow of air and a wipe from a shirt is my method.

Of course, if I happen to be cleaning a record off, it isn't mine in the first place since I don't collect vinyl. Whoever's library I happen to be pulling a record from probably wouldn't appreciate my cleaning methods, now that I think about it.:toothless

Dish soap is fine, just rinse it off well to remove any residue and then wipe the record down with a soft cloth, obviously in the direction of the grooves.

A lot of people will poo-poo it ("Your records will melt!"), but I've used lighter fluid and a microfibre cloth for years with zero hassle. Any residue evaporates quickly, and it's great at removing embedded gunk. And really, we're talking 12" dance records that are receiving regular use, not some rare Moody Blues live Japanese bootleg that is only handled by its edges with soft, white gloves and gets played twice yearly.

lighter fluid for those really tough ones that are more than just dust.

For regular dusting, try a fabreze duster instead of the brush. I haven't used my brush since I started doing that.

After Gruv Glide jumped up in price, I started using Zippo lighter fluid and it works like a charm.

In really extreme cases where you want to get a deep clean, use wood glue...no bull.
