any tips on getting a good mixdown w/ laptop soundcard?

Like for instance would it make any difference bouncing the individual stems and mixing them in a different session? I'm still not clear whether or not the internal soundcard has any affect on ITB mixes. Using Logic btw
I have noticed when I freeze all the tracks first the final bounce does seem to sound better |

For in the box mixes it shouldn't have any effect.
How are you determining that the frozen export is better? I'd say do two exports, with random filenames (like kdbvrf.wav and jshdvrfh.wav) and note somewhere which is which. Then come back a month later and play them in a random order and see which one you prefer. Best if you can do this with a number of songs. I'd be surprised if you come up with a "this way is definitively better", or even hear any difference, but who knows.
An easier way would be to just remove all modulation from a song and do two exports, then see if the two versions null out if one of them is played out of phase.
Our minds can play a bunch of tricks on us. I know mine has on me! |

I can't remember where but I read or heard someone else say this the other day and they added that it's because the CPU is under a lot less strain this way and it makes a difference..
I've never tried it but I agree, I can't see how it would make a difference? |

it doesn't
CPU stress is not an error factor.
Room acoustics and monitoring are.
would rather focus there if you want results. |

i wouldn't say it has much to do with CPU strain but how logic bounces the audio. It doesn't seem 100% accurate, at least I THINK I can tell a difference but it's so subtle probably doesn't matter. Either way thanks for the replies |

problem is if i use my onboard soundcard with the laptop, i get very poor driver performance, cracks and crackles/stutters happen very quickly.
for this reason i think your better of getting an external card imo. i picked up a ESI UGM96 for about 30 second hand and its great for what i want. ie just producing on headphones while i dont have a room to work in! |
