First of all, big ups to tta for unsuspending me.

I figure I should be doing my schoolwork heading into midterms week but this (in my incredibly warped mind) is somehow more important.

To clarify once for and all:

NOT true: I hate all white people
NOT true: I am a racist (my definition of racism being that someone who believes that people are superior/inferior to others based solely on the criteria of race)
NOT true: I totally hate my roomate
NOT true: My mind has drastically changed

True:I do have a preconcieved notion about white people, just like I do about any group (let alone race), but this is preconcieved and goes away when I really get to know someone. Case in point, I can safely that the number of white friends I have outnumbers the amount of Asian friends at least 5:1.
True:I said some really stupid things. Can apologize but can't take them back.
True:Many of you people need to remember to read the whole story and not take things at face value without knowing everything behind it
True:I need to not press hot buttons when I am not thinking perfectly clearly
True:Every race/creed is different
True:These differences do not make us any less human than one another
True:It's ok to rib someone about common sterotypes of their race
True:It's not ok to antagonize someone about their race
True:I would enjoy it a bit more if I lived alone

So basically the take home messages:

We're different and that's ok.
Love one another but not indiscriminately.
We're human, therefore we up every once in a while.

Enough moralizing. On to....well...other things

It's no big deal. Don't let the relatively small number of bigots on these boards bother you, and don't worry about making other people upset. I wouldn't care how outrageous your opinions appeared to be, because they're just opinions and everyone's entitled to them. Just because an opinion is unpopular doesn't make you a bad person to express it. People took your remarks out of context, that's what started this. You shouldn't be apologizing for it, they should.

The people who bother me aren't the ones who say radical or unpopular things, it's the people whose minds are so fragile that they can't handle such opinions being expressed. After all, who's better, the racist who never acts on his hatred, or the self-righteous man who would kills a racist solely for his opinions?

Cheers,

Arbiter

Thanks for your support

However, I must reiterate that I am NOT (at least not about 95% of the time and that time I'm just pissed off and should be ignored) a racist.

True :D You know mate, words are powerful, and sometimes we need to be careful with them (unless we don't mind about what will happen next). I won't lie to you, I got a bit offended by some of your words (otherwise, I wouldn't have started a thread about "racism in these forums", which led to a very interesting discussion, by the way).

However, I think that we all here learned something from what happened. Let's just forget it and hope we've learned something.

Though we're very different people (I'd almost say we're opposites), I find your opinions very interesting indeed, Arbiter, that's why I like to discuss things with you. Anyway, in this example you've just given, obviously, there's no better or worse, because both will be wrong.

Nevertheless, I still think that we should be cautious about racism. Obviously, we shouldn't be as narrow-minded as racist people are, but we need to watch out because this is not something harmless. There's no problem to talk about it, however, when you say things like "I hate white people", nothing good comes out of it and you're actually offending people, no matter what your intentions were. Why say these words then? It's just... pointless.

I agree that racism is an issue we ought to be cautious about. But the better we understand it's nature, and the way people who are racist think, the better we can hope to combat it. That is why I think open discussions regarding issues of race are beneficial, rather than detrimental, even if they contain controversial assertions.

It is true that the statement "I hate white people" would add nothing of value to such an inquiry, however. But I don't understand why it offends people. Personally, it makes me feel superior to the person who made the statment. I like feeling superior (who doesn't?) so it's fine with me if people want to embarass themselves.
