Creating that live arena sound?

K, just so u know, I am DJing with just PCDJ + Stanton RM-3 mixer right now. I know mp3 mixing is lame, but I've being doing it happily for 2 years, and I am buying my TTs in a week.

One of the things I've noticed, is that when I record my sets, and compare it to, say Chicane - Live @ Palladium 22-01-2000... my set lacks are certain OOMPH, and seems to take away from the energy a bit.

I have played with reverbs and chorus effects, but to no avail. I've also played with the pitch and EQs. I just can't seem to get that sound I'm looking for.

Does anyone have some ideas as to how to create that live sound? Maybe its the quality loss from vinyl to mp3, and the mp3 lacks something in the sound. Now that I think about it, maybe the energy comes from high master volume, which causes mp3s to lose a lot of quality.

Or am I just not going about doing this the right way? I've also thought about delay effects, and maybe some high fequency noise to mimic a crowd.

I'll post some audio samples to show what I mean when I find the time.

Yes.. the sound gets more "flat" in someway..

That’s because live sets broadcast on the radio go through a huge compression before being broadcast live.

Yeah, that and eq'ed to death, and usually they mix in a tad of the room ambience (basically, reverb). Not much. Just enough to make it sound fuller...

Well, If you want to listen to your live sets or singles mp3s like if they were played in a huge arena or club, I use my Sony Dolby Digity/DTS receiver, It also comes with sound field effects, I use the Opera House soundfield to hear that awesome reverb effect. :)

I have a SB Live! sound card which features EAX, so when I mix I go to the card's mixer and add tons of reverb -- now there's no difference between me and Chicane. :P
