Side chain => volume automate?

Is side chain same thing as automating the volume?
I mean if I have a synth and I want to have side chain on it? is it same thing to automate the volume of the synth? I am using Reason, and the volume automation is pretty easy, I am still learning so not yet sure how to side chain.

Hi there,

Sidechain basically means to connect the output of a device into the sidechain input of another in order to control any parameter.

if you're meaning at that pumping effect that most people just call sidechain its real name is "Ducking", and yes it's the same as you automate the volume, but instead of automating the volume you use another device output to control it. I.E. a Kick that controls the bass volume.

Does this answer your question?

I think most people use side chained compression for that "pumping" effect on the bass. Send the kick drum to the detector input and the bass to the audio input of the compressor. It also helps your mix too by making the kick drum stand out more.

yes pretty much

the only thing is that if you automate volume instead of actual sidechaining it might sound a bit different, this depends on how exactly you do the volume automation :)

Although it can just be simple volume automation, bear in mind there are different variables with side chain compared to just simple volume automation; usually sidechain is done with a compressor which affects the dyanmics, not just the gain. Also, other variable such as the length of the sample/note used to trigger the sidechain will affect the envelope shape of the effect from the compressor, then you also have all the other perameters of the compressor.

All in all, unless you literally just want a straight up gain pump, then you're better off using a sidechain with a compressor.
