EQing (the question about matching the kick)?
View this Thread in Original format

I have been looking tutorials and they say EQing is very important. If you have bass, you need to EQ it so it doesn't interfere with the kick drum. But how do I know the frequency of the kick so I can EQ the bass correctly? Or same with lead synth or even with vocals? I am a bit confused :eyes:

I use Reason's Redrum + it doesn't show any EQ values or anything about the kick? :conf:

Hello,

The answer you're gonna get from everyone is "use your ears and practice"

and that's true, you just need to listen and tweak EQ parameters until you get the sound you're looking for. this could take years of practice.

Sometimes a spectrum analyzer could help, having a visual idea of the frequencies, but I think this is not available in Reason

My advice is play the sounds that are in "conflict" together put an eq in one of them and create a peak of about 6db and start sweeping until you get sounds really masking, that will be one of the frequencies you should cut out.

As a rule of thumb don't EQ in SOLO!

With practice you will be able to identify frequency ranges to cut or add to have cleaner mixes.

Does Reason have a Visual EQ?

If it does you could put one on both the kick and the bass and put them side by side.

To be honest with you though, the best way is to do it with your ears. This opens the door to using all different types of EQ plugins instead of just visual ones which can be useful.

Here is how ReaEQ, the visual EQ that comes with Reaper looks:

A good way to EQ your kick and bass is to use the boost and sweep method. Use a parametric EQ, boost a band in the lower frequencies by a few dB (use a narrow bandwidth/Q), and sweep the frequency up and down in 60-120Hz range to find the fundamental frequency of the kick. Make note of the Hz, the set the EQ back to 0. On your bass track, notch out that same frequency using your EQ. Then, do the opposite - find the fundamental frequency range of your bass (keeping in mind that this will be different for each bass note) by boosting/sweeping, and create a dip in that same range on your kick drum. Just remember that this isn't a formula, it's just an approach to get you started. You'll probably go through several iterations (relying heavily on your ears, with some help from a spectrum analyzer) before you'll get it right.

ing LOL.

I mentioned that in her other thread recently. She posted a pretty obvious question (not stupid though) and got 15 responses and a complete step-by-step walk through from Palm.

Seriously, you want quick answers on predominantly male forum, create a female alt.

Part of it is also explained by the "easy question" part. Ask an easy question, way more people know an answer.

That being said, dat caption :D

Echosystem + DJ Rann, I didn't know this is forum for just guys? So this is some sort of gay forum where girls aren't welcome?

Thanks for others who tried to help + explain!

Naw, that wasn't their point. But, yes, the truth is that this subforum is mostly an all-boys club, and we can be pretty brutal towards males, especially when they're newbs. But we're far more...errrr...chivalrous (???) when a female producer is present. :)

No, not at all. It just feels like a sausage party in here most of the time so it's actually welcome to have a member of the fairer sex grace us.

I think Dave (cryo) said it best; we're a lot better behaved when there's a lady in the room ;)

Oh and I didn't bother chiming in as you already got good answers to what was a pretty simple question.
