| Well there was a thread on what program everyone uses. I personally use Sound Forge, but i was wondering what everyone used to connect their tables to their computer. I use an RCA to Line In/Out to connect my mixer to my computer to record my mixs. The quality isn't too great tho. I was wondering what everyone else used. I'd like to get better quality mixs. I was thinking about SPDIF cable. Would this work? Is the quality better? How can I record both channels seperatly on my card. I have a SB Audigy. |

| I just use the line-in on my SB Live! and use creative recorder. Works fine, quality is very good :) |

Seems to work fine for me too...
Just using the line-in of my Aureal Vortex |

| You could be clipping your recording if it doesn’t sound too great on your PC. Have a check of your levels (computer end) and try again. |

Soundcard definitely makes all of the difference in the world. You have an Audigy, so you shouldn't have any problems. Did the Audigy come with any recording applications? I use the Extigy...that came with the Creative Wave Studio. It works extremely well for me. I run the Master out of my mixer (RCA-to-mini) to the line-in of my Extigy.
Spin Doctor suggested checking your computer levels...he's exactly right. Double-click on the speaker icon in your system tray, go to Options->Properties, and click the Recording radio button. Make sure Line In is checked. Now you should see your Recording Properties window. Move the Line In slider accordingly to get a nice balanced input. You should be able to monitor it while you are running a recording.
Good luck. |

I do monitor the levels while i record. The weird thing is tho that whenever I record a mix, the mix is always very quite. I have the volume of the line in on my audigy set to 90%. I have the master gain on the mixer set up all the way and the gains on each channel for the tables set to 75%. When I turn any of these gains up on the mixer, it starts to clip. When I turn the line in up on my sound card the recording clips. When i turn it down so the levels seem right in the recording while i monitor it, but the recording is still too quiet when i play it afterwards. Is there something I'm doing wrong? I use soundforge to record my mixs. |

Hmmm...tough one.
I usually have the Line-In set between the 5th and 6th mark of the Volume Properties in Windows.
I haven't used SoundForge, I've heard its a top notch piece of recording software. If you aren't happy with the way its interacting with your recording, try using the Creative Wave Studio software that came with your Audigy. DVS mentioned in a previous post that it works for him. That's what I use as well. If you want to use SoundForge, you can always use it after you've recorded your mix to add effects, etc. Just record your mix using Creative Wave Studio, then when you're done, open up your mix with SoundForge and edit it.
Give it a shot, you don't have anything to lose except maybe a few megs of hard drive space :) I'll try to get a copy of SoundForge and see if I can re-create the problem.
Happy Mixing  |

Ok, I got a copy of SoundForge 5, and put it on my office PC. I couldn't run my mixer into it, since all of my gear is at home. However, to simulate your setup, I used my minidisc player. I have a minidisc playing out through the headphone jack, and instead of running it out through headphones, I put it out through a mini-to-mini right into my soundcard.
After playing with the Windows Volume Control properties, I was able to record a clear .mp3 of what was playing on my MD, so for me, SoundForge wasn't a problem, I just had to tweak the Windows Volume Control to that happy medium where it wasn't too loud or too quiet.
Hope I'm not insulting you, I'll try explaining it. You can double-click the little yellow speaker in your system tray (next to where your system time is displayed). Select Options->Properties, select Adjust volume for Recording, and click OK. Now your recording volume properties are dislplayed. Make sure Line-In is checked.
Now throw on a vinyl, adjust the gain/EQs/channel fader on your mixer to the volume you're looking for. Now start up SoundForge and hit record. You can also open your Windows Volume Control properties, and lower/raise the Line-In settings while you're recording. Hopefully, you'll find the Line-In setting that sounds good.
Hope you can get this working :) I don't mean to sound condescending, its just easier to explain everything in detail from start to finish when you are troubleshooting an issue like this.
Good luck! |

thanks dude for the advice and the detailed post. But the thing is, I do adjust the volume and gains with all my gear and sound card, but the problem is when I set it too high, i notice that the recording clips when I record through soundforge. when i keep the volume right below clipping, the recording still comes out too quiet. Here let me explain better.
I have a Y cable, which I hook up the RCA end to the Rec out on my mixer to the Line In on my Audigy. I have the master gain on my mixer up all the way, and the gains on my 1st and 3rd channels (channels where my tables are hooked up to set to 75%. This works perfectly when I DJ in my room. I can turn the volume up on each channel almost all the way withouth clipping on my mixer. Anyway, I adjust the volume of my Line In through the Creative Sound control program and set it to 85%. I then record my mixs through sound forge. When I monitor the mix, my sound levels are consistently up high, but just below clipping.
After I finish the mix, I'll listen to it and the levels are always too low. I have to really crank up the volume on my computer to hear it. If I compare it to an mp3 that I have downloaded from a CD, the loudness of the Mp3 is normally twice that of the recorded mix.
I have tried cranking up the Line In to 95% to 100% in the Volume control on my computer. When I do this the recording clips very badly but the loudness of the mix is higher, but still not as high as any mp3 ripped from a CD.
I know I don't have a bad cable because I use the same cable to play music from my computer through my mixer. (I always just switch the connections of the cable for recording). Also the volume controls for the Creative Mixer which I adjust the volume on, is the same as the windows volume control.
sorry, this post is kinda long. It is a weird problem.
Thanks for all the previous advice and any future if you can figure out what i'm doing wrong. |
