So Apple launched an Imac upgrade today and I have to say I'm underwhelmed;
I get it, this is more for video production peeps and I'm sure the screen is absolutely beautiful but I doubt it will make that much sense to anyone doing audio.
It is nice to see an option for an i7 4ghz Quad core CPU, better dedicated video cards (which means less overhead on CPU so more power) and fusion drives as standard on all retina models but for the price they're really not that great value.
Not much better with the ipads. Just minor tweaks.
Apple must have hired the guys that did the last reason release :haha: |

I have a Retina MacBook Pro and I legitimately can't stand looking at my iMac's screen anymore. What did you want them to add? I honestly can't imagine performance getting that much better. |

1, Well DAW's aren't exactly programmed with GUI's in mind so actually having a clearer image of them is not really a benefit, but I do know what you're getting at. Most people don't understand that the clearer the image the less fatigue and with anything hour intensive like that, the more the better (or vice versa). So yes, it's nice but really not going to make us audio people drop $2499 on the base model, before tax.
2, I think the fusion drive thing is nothing more than a bridge technology; Apple can't compete with aftermarket SSD's at a fraction of the cost so their solution is to push a half technology. In 10 years time it will all be large SSD's, none of this "we used a small SSD on the front end to give you speed and a HDD to give you capacity". It's like hybrid cars now - they are a bridge (and a weak one at that) the let the car companies have some kind of offering that's both environmentally and oil lobbyist friendly until they finally admit defeat. in 30 years, most people in developed nations will be (back to) driving electric cars.
3, How about a significant upgrade on onboard audio chips? They could do it so easily to the point it would drop the bottom out of the entry level audio interface market or push audio manufacturers to up their game. |

Fusion actually works though... have you used it? It's crazy how much it improves the experience of using the machine. I mean, of course it's a bridge technology, but the panel in that iMac cost Apple so much that they don't exactly have wiggle room on the price to maintain margins. Dell's new 5k monitor is the *same price.* $2500.
As for the onboard audio, I mean, okay, sure, but I do think this is a case of realizing that that market, in the grand scheme of things, couldn't matter less to Apple. The people that need a solution have one. So yeah, Apple could easily do it, but I wouldn't get my hopes up. |

This is like the last gen Mac Pro updates.
The non retina iMacs have been shafted meaning you can only get the proper modern options on the much more expensive model, for example speccing a 512GB SSD on a non retina iMac is still 400? ffs. Saying that even on the retina iMac it's still a 240 upgrade. It should really come standard on the retina.
At least they've kept the RAM user upgradable. Unlike my Macbook Pro
@Seandroid, you appear to be lost matey :-

Ya'll get the new download/update? |

Now that Ableton Live supports Retina Displays (Live 9 Beta) I think the 5k display would be a great screen to work on :) And if you use Ableton's zoom display option and turn that down to around 70-80% you can get even more space to work on. |

I was making a funny by linking to the WIP thread (cos that's the only place I see you post) but it backfired because I linked to the Colours thread instead.
So curses to that.
I see Apple have quietly updated the Mac Minis so that you can no longer spec a quad core.
Way to go you profiteering cvnts. :whip: |

Amusingly that's actually where I expected that link to go and is why I was confused. I used to be more active throughout the production/promotion forums but the WIP killed everything else.
I thought you were being sassy as in "you don't know anything about technology" lol
Anyway, yeah, I wonder if it has something to do with the switch to Haswell. You also can't get the Mac Mini as a server anymore. |
