Trance Discussion - Meaning and Lyrics
View this Thread in Original format

Hey all! First time posting on the forums here so I hope I'm doing this right and I'll actually get responses...

I don't actually get the chance to talk about trance in real life conversation even though that's all I ever want to do. I just get turned down too often. Well here's my first try in trying to "discuss" interesting details about trance because I just want to know everything about it and what people think about it. I hope this works out. :conf:

To the point: I've read in some threads that people think Trance lyrics are dominantly centered on love, which makes it pretty much universal and easy to relate to. What else can you get behind the meaning of Trance music and its lyrics? Why is it so enjoyable to trance addicts like us, and what makes it so unpopular?

I also want to know where did this idea about love being the main theme originate? I think that has more to do with how trance started.

Okay, so lyrics aren't always the most important feature in this type of music - it's not even present in most tunes. I don't think the lyrics in individual tunes have a huge meaning (maybe you do?). I feel like it has more to do with following the traditional elements of trance. I don't mean vocals and choosing whose voice would fit the mood or meaning behind of a track. I just want to know some of your opinions on the necessity and purpose of the lyrics.

I'd seriously love to know some of your thoughts! And if this isn't the right place to discuss about this or if there is a better forums site, please post it. :tongue2
Thanks!

Most of these tunes have a fluffy, uplifting composition, so it makes sense that the lyrical content would be equally fluffy and uplifting, and love-centric themes fit the bill quite nicely. It really isn't all that different from many other forms of pop music throughout the past three decades up to the present; I don't have any percentages to work with, but I'd hazard a guess that a mere all of them are about love and relationships.

That's true. I look down on pop music though because it is so narrowly focused on relationships, love, breakups. It gets tiring, but for some reason it's satisfying in trance and I hope it isn't because I'm biased. Better love than booty and drugs.

I don't think it's something to necessarily 'look down' on, really; it's what people tend to be (inordinately) focused on in their lives, it's something they want to hear and relate to, and especially so in a way that's pleasing to the ear. But lyrics and meaning are ultimately secondary to commercial catchiness, and prioritizing that concern further compromises whatever little substance most of these songs have in the first place.

So sure, I find it all to be insufferably banal nonsense, but I still can't necessarily look down on it from a 'music-concept' perspective, if that makes any sense.

I noticed a more recent trend of lyrics containing messages of, as Method Man would say, "releasing yo' delf!", giving reason to raise your arms in the air during the huge overblown breakdown and reaching for that big sky above. Yeah, it's little more than commanding a crowd to cheer during the drop (sometimes wrapped in pseudo-spiritual mumbo-jumbo), which they'd do regardless, but I guess it's at least something different from all the love bollocks.

Where love lyrics are missing, the heart hand gesture takes their place:

kosmotika
I don't care about lyrics and typically I don't prefer them to be there. Makes it way too poppy most of the time.
Not referring to short clips, moreso just tracks where the vocal is either the prominent feature or is just kind of chiseled in.

there's also the anti-fluff sleazy vocal. i like this one.

Within "Trance" there's different genres too. You have your dark trance (which at times are downright scary at time), you have your pulse beating 'racing' trance where you feel like you're flying at 1,000 mph to get to the checkered flag first, then there's your happy love trance.

So you can't really just say trance is based solely on 'love'.

I prefer my vocals spun and sampled.
