Meat187 - Is the Grass greener on the other side? [Melodic Full-On Psytrance]

Currently I feel like trying new genres. I had some first contact with Psy when I mixed it with Eurobeat a while ago, and that was good fun. Indeed I liked some of the melodic, relentless, happy-sounding tracks and decided to put them in a mix of their own.
Probably this will suffer from the rather narrow perspective I have on the genre, and the lack of experience in mixing it and handling the flow. I'm interested to hear some constructive criticism from TA's psy-heads, but for me this works as a collection of tracks and elements I like and nothing more.
Tracklist:
01. Gataka - Dreaming Mode
02. Bizzare Contact feat. Vibe Tribe & Spade - Southern Sensation
03. Aquatica vs. Sesto Sento - Pimp my Symphony
04. Linkin Park - Numb [Audiotec vs. Didrapest Remix]
05. Bizzare Contact - Collision
06. Digital Tribe - Sweet Dreams [Gemini Remix]
07. Altom - Viper [Didrapest Remix]
08. Vibe Tribe - In Core
09. Vibe Tribe vs. Ziki - The 5th Time
10. Future Prophecy & Electro Sun - Higher than ever [2012 Remake]
11. Sesto Sento - Mysterious Ways
12. Yves Larock - Rise up [Sesto Sento vs. Electro Sun Remix]
13. Gataka - King of the Hill
14. Yahel - Voyage [Didrapest vs. Prospect Remix]
15. Space Cat - The Purist [Vibe Tribe Remix]

| Well I'm not big on this style anymore but I'll give it a go. |

| Too bad. I'd prefer hearing a competently made mix of this stuff from you over making it myself. :p |

| It's really cool that you've made this. I felt with your last psy mix that there definitely is some cheesy upbeat psytrance but that you just need to dig a bit harder to find it. I'll tell you what I think of it some time soon. |

I'll listen to this again at least once, but for the first listen:
It's pretty good overall, it has a fairly narrow range of styles (which is good) and you gradually build up and change the styles/energy over the course of the mix well. In terms of things to improve:
-The second track is of a fairly punchy/housey progpsy style and doesn't really fit in with the rest of the mix, I'd probably just drop it unless you're planning on leading into that style, it's too different to sit there on it's own
-The transition from the third and fourth track was a little bit jarring, to fix it maybe play the incoming track at a lower volume (20-30%ish) without bass and then slam it in with a bass crossover. Or there might be a few alternate mixing styles that don't play both basses fully at once that could also work. The transition between the two tracks was still nice though and built energy.
-Early on I felt like all the tracks were quite maximal and that a few (slightly) more subtle energy building tracks would help the flow a bit, this improves towards the middle and end of the mix though.
-The second last track felt a tiny bit out of place, perhaps another track in between the style of that one and the previous one would add to the flow
-Some of the vocals were a bit bad, in particular the auto tuned indian chick in the last track, she just sounded like she was going "ya ya ya" pointlessly]
Overall though I see the style you're going for and you've captured it pretty well. It seems fairly similar in some respects to your eurodance mixes but with psy. |

Awesome, dude! That's exactly he type of input I had hoped for, thanks a ton.
Regarding the last track, I thought she IS just saying "ya ya ya". Are that supposed to be words? I also felt the second track doesn't really fit but really like it and wanted it in. Together with what you say about the high energy level in the beginning (holy , Collision is such a monster) this leads me to think that I should explore the genre a little deeper and do another mix sometime where I can put a wider range of style and "in-your-face"-cheesiness. Probably I'll do so, this one was loads of fun, and that's the most important thing for me.
Next, however, is Eurobeat. Most likely with a very special guest performance. :) |
