100 per cent vote `yes' in Saddam referendum
By Ellen Knickmeyer
ASSOCIATED PRESS

BAGHDAD — Iraq declared Saddam Hussein the winner yesterday — by an 11 million-to-0 margin — in a war-shadowed referendum on his two-decade military rule, sending celebratory gunfire crackling from the streets and rooftops of Baghdad.

The 100 per cent turnout, 100 per cent "yes" vote shows all Iraqis are poised to defend Saddam against American forces, the country's No.2 man said.

"If they come, we will fight them in every village, and every house," said Izzat Ibrahim, vice-chairman of Iraq's Revolutionary Command Council, as he announced results of what Iraq billed as a people's referendum on keeping Saddam in power another seven years.

The U.S. government has dismissed the referendum as a propaganda exercise. "It's not even worthy of our ridicule," State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said Tuesday. Baghdad crackled with automatic weapon fire at the results, announced live on state TV. "This referendum and the 100 per cent shows that all Iraqis are ready to defend their country and their leader," said Khaled Yusef, dancing on a street corner.

Iraqis were asked to vote yes or no on whether Saddam, 65, should remain in office. Ibrahim said all 11,445,638 eligible voters had cast ballots, and all for Saddam.

Authorities offered no explanation for how they counted paper ballots from cities and villages across Iraq overnight.

Iraqi media compared Saddam's win to George W. Bush's 2000 election victory, eked out in the Electoral College despite losing to Al Gore in the popular vote.

"The truth of the matter is that he (Bush) won by a fraction of the votes, and this fraction was engineered by sly lawyers' games," said the state-run Iraqi Daily.

"Maybe this is one of the main reasons for his hysterical threats on the Iraqi choice!" .......

even the most stout iraqi-supporter would know this is a hoax.... no way 11 million to 0... there's ALWAYS going to be disapprovers. Again the issue of counting paper ballots from around 11 million civilians? rrrrrright.... i believe the reporter who claimed it to be a propaganda scheme....

actually the article read "of the 11 million eligible voters".... which insinuates there were MORE peope in the country than eligible voters... my guess is that the females are not allowed to vote, as children aren't allowed as well...

Everyone votes "yes" because they dont want to be executed :haha:

it is possible, i mean the ballot form probly has 3 fields: Name, address, who your voting for.
this way it makes it more convenient for them to find and knee cap you in the off chance you Dont vote for saddam.

but hey they still have elections
Nadi
I don't think anyone voted against him. However I do think people would if they wernt afraid of being savegly tortured by him.

"hmm...saddam hussein is a mean president(or watever), but who would come if he leaves???is that successor gonna be better, or worse??...meh..y take the risk, ill vote FOR saddam"

see..all they had was to answer yes or no to him stayin president longer...and apparently the people fear his son (or nephew..not sure) as he is worse than him
