how did markus schultz pull off this midrange bass?

I've been enamored by this song for years and have tried to analyze the midrange bass without much luck. Obviously it's sidechained and to my ears it sounds like it came from an analog synth. It sounds like a plain saw without much detune or perhaps maybe the saw pwm from a Juno.

If you go to 5:38 in the song below you'll hear what I'm talking about. It sounds like he slowly automates some EQ midrange boost. That's my first impression but I don't think that's correct. Perhaps it's an increase in some midrange overdrive or something similar which boosts the mid and cuts the highs.

I wanted to run this by the professionals here in hopes of some tips.

square and saw lead an octave apart then bandpass filter. There is some kind of distortion on it and it's obviously ducked.

The bandpass is LFO'd which gives that swept EQ feel.

Sounds right to me, plus the obvious portamento.

I've always liked this track, and this remix is very nice.

Thanks, I'll give that a try when I get home. I love the tonality of that midrange bass in this song but I know that'd require knowing what synth and type of distortion he used. It sounds very analog to me, something I doubt I'll achieve with any VST's.

Yeah, especially since it's spelled properly in the YouTube video I linked. Also, especially since I've been listening to this guy since I heard "You Won't See Me Cry" back in '00 or '01. I always have a problem spelling his last name even after all these years.

I think this song is in the running for "longest trance breakdown ever", I believe the title of "longest trance buildup ever" still goes to Art Of Trance - Madagascar.

Please forgive him. He forgot to switch hands 3 times today and is a bit tense.

Nope, I think the longest buildup is Illuminateus - Hope. 4 minutes of build up before a beat finally kicks in.

I have been into electronic for quite some years, but for me..the scene began with that track right there. Blew me away and still blows me away when I hear it.
