Work Christmas parties and participation...

Is it a good thing not to attend a Christmas party if given a choice? Does it look bad if you don't? I guess all instances are different.

I have an idea what people would say but I don't want to go. I'm hoping to leave very soon at my job and I'm guessing not going wouldn't fair well if I maybe want a good reference in the near future. And the party is from 2-5pm.... so if I don't go it'll be awkward.

One other note on me leaving.... does it also look bad if I don't participate in contributing to a new born gift or similar? I've already given about $140 this year to the office. I doubt I'll be around long enough for my turn to come around. You can tell I'm not all about it. But this principle pretty much applies to weddings... so it's not wrong think like that.

But that looks bad too right? Even though I'm not 'obligated' to contribute.

Thoughts please... thanks.

Lady who collects $20 each time someone has a kid hesitated when I said 'no, I'm not contributing this time'.

When the guy went around thanking everyone he skipped me. I'm wondering if he found out... or if the lady or someone told him. Oh well.

straight goods $20 is to much unless your close to said coworker...

I work in an office and we give ppl the choice of pitching what ever you can afford $2, $5, $10, or what ever...

the only person you need to worry about a reference is your director/manager/team lead...

if the xmas party is free and its during work hours why wouldn't you go unless you really dislike your coworkers....

but straight goods $20 is to much and $140 is wayyyyy to much...

I personally like to randomly bring in coffee or timbits if I have the extra cash...

That's just stupid; collecting money from workmates for newborn kids or weddings.

It should be coming from their friends they invited TO the actual babyshower/wedding/whatever. Workmates =! friends. They can piss off and I totally support your position Dior Homme.

100% agreed.

I find it so tacky when people start collections for babies, birthdays, and whatever else at the workplace. At my work they even started one for our manager when she left. Why??

I never contribute to those things. Again, tacky as hell. Don't people have manners anymore? Jesus.

This thread is hilarious.

I'm skipping the work Christmas party tomorrow to check out Martin Buttrich and Loco Dice at Output!

These types of collections shouldn't be allowed in the workplace. HR shouldn't allow it. You've shelled out $140 this year already for group gifts, and they still want more? That's outrageous. Guaranteed you aren't the only one that feels this way.

Glad I don't have to deal with that nonsense at my work.

We have only one unspoken rule at work. Bring in treats on your birthday. Even when we do a potluck Christmas, we are reimbursed with a grocery gift card.

I am not participating on the next baby gift. It's not that I don't like these people... I think it's getting too much.

And now this non participation is having a social effect with the older adults at my work. LOL
