Sounds like this one just kind of slipped in without much notice or even fanfare this year, but it's probably one of the better of the past three or so editions, feeling more focused and tightly put together than many others (this year's is especially drone heavy, even for Pop Ambient). Most apparent is how many of the regular faces are missing this year; it's not just another episode of the "Burger/Voigt/Fehlmann/Popnoname/Jules, plus special guests!" show (not that was ever a real problem). Anyway, it's good: a bunch of pleasant material, a couple of standouts, and no duds. Have a listen:

| Because it's a new and generally anticipated release I felt was worth more publicity than however much it would get from being filed away in the review thread. That little sprinkling of an appraisal doesn't amount to much of a review, either. |

| There are some nice tracks on here, as ever, but listening to a Pop Ambient disc in full always makes me feels like I'm slowly drowning in morphine. Some emotional variety wouldn't go amiss. |

Yeah, every year I sample the new Pop Ambient and hope for just that, but that kind of thing just doesn't happen often. Don't get me wrong, I love how the series sits near-opposite that Ibiza-Lounge-Sunset-Bar variety of chillout, but 14 editions worth of droning haze has left me with more than I know what to do with. Every now and then, they strike gold with that incredible balance, like on Pop Ambient 2009.
