need headphone advice.. from club/live dj's preferably.. but all advice welcomed!

alright.. this debate will never end so I kinda gave up on the "headphones" thread. basically here is the situation.. i'm need new headphones and i need 'em bad. i have the Sony v6's and i love them and the sound they make, however the plastic where the metal part of the headband connects to the phone is/has been cracking and now its basically held together w/ tape... too bad Sony didn't include any swivel action in these babies.. anyway, i'd get another set its just that IMO they don't cut it in the power handling. so i've narrowed my surch down to 3 sets: Pioneer SE-DJ5000, Technics RP-DJ1200 (in my searches, it seems that the 1210E is a european model but thats just an assumption), & the sony v700. basically I have $100 and i can get either of these 3 for $100, if highly recommended i might shell out the extra $40 for the HDJ1000 but i haven't read enough to satisfy the higher cost because basically, i don't give a about looks, i need comfort and most of all, productivity in a club environment! that was something taht lacked in the v6's.. i'm sure i won't find a better sound than the v6 but its ok because even taped up, i can still listen to my stereo w/ them.. they just don't cut it in the dj environment.
So, this is why I am asking dj's that perform at clubs or even live at parties (hopefully that you can understand the noise level differences between the afore mentioned and the bedroom), no offense to you all that havnt got outta the bedroom yet, its just that i need advice from actual experience and not what we've all read in articles and on webboards. However, it is the knowledge i've gained from you all that led me to these 3 models, so your input is still greatly appreciated because I will still be using these headphones about 80% of the time in my apartment for practice! so i want comfort as well, although the v6's weren't that great in comfort but i can get used to most anything. durability needs to be an issue and thats y i'm lookin at the pioneer sedj5000 because they seem to cator to the one-eared-shoulder-support method which i do a lot of. i think thats how i broke my v6's... i really don't want the sony v700 because straight up, i don't like the way they sound, i know theres people that live by them but personally, i don't like them and I have two other dj friends who have both had their v700's break after about a year (one guy's cracked at the swivel and the other guy had problems w/ the cable and the soddering of the wires or i dunno and don't really care because he didn't like the phones either). i don't know anything bout the technics phones except that people on this board seem to recommend them and they can be bought for $100 so they got on my list. I use Sennheiser HD 25 SP, they block out so much noise its incredible, they go VERY loud before becoming unclear. Each cup is fully rotatable, very comfortable to wear and mines have lasted well. Far superior sound quality to any Sony or Technics phones I have tried (never tried Pioneer myself), I won't be changing to another brand unless something special comes along!
Might cost a wee bit more but they are so worth the money (I got mines for £75 about a year ago) |

| Ask DJ Liquid about the Pioneers...he should be able to give you a good report on them. He'll be able to say how they held up on his weekend bash!! :) |

my best friend uses the pioneers and he's had nothing but praise for them in a loud environment
his ears have been starting to go now for a little bit and he loves the isolation the give so he doesn't have to crank them up
i've tried the technics as well, and they are pretty good
the only concern i have is that swivel lock thing... just if it will start to loosen up after a while |

i myself use the dj1210's and i have absolutely nothing bad to say about them
they block the sound great and are really clear when you crank them
also they are really comfortable because you don't have to angle them on your head so you only have one cup on your ear...
instead you just put them on normally and move the one earcup back...i don't lock them like that either...there's no point they stay perfectly in place as is |

Your sonys are cracking. How am I not surprised. I guess sony quality will continue to be sony quality as long as the sun sets.
Anyhow, i would recommend the Technics RPDJ1200A. I have researched many months now, about headphones and best ones for djing. I have noticed that most people have great things to say about them, and that the reviews are consitant.
I am personally saving for those headphones. |

sorry glue.. no pic i don't have a digital camera.. i have a scanner but can't seem to get my computer to recognize it.. but i see your in irvine now?? thought u were not from cali.. anyhow, im about a 40 min drive from u (i go to UCR) so if u wanna check it out.. see i always put one cup behind an ear and hold the other w/ my shoulder as i have read is good w/ the pioneers.. honestly, i don't want to spend the money to replace that little plastic part because these phones *remember this is my personal opinion* are not made for a club environment, maybe others are fine w/ them.. but i've been exposed to very loud music since i was a child and i'm assuming this has not been great for my ears, so when i have to pick out sounds, its really hard unless i crank it higher than the outside, and well, the v6 can't handle it.. i love the quality of the v6 and i'm actually afraid of blowing them out so instead of having them tread along their threshhold, i'd rather get another pair to abuse, and keep the awesome sound quality of the v6 for what they were intended: enjoying music.. some headphones are made for cranking as loud as they can, these are not one of them, some headphones are made for perfect sound quality and the v6's would have to be them. well thanks for all your help, i had pretty much decided on the pioneers before i wrote the post but i was trying to see if someone could convince/talk-me-out of that decision, but i seem to not be able to be turned away from the pioneers so i'm gonna order them.. and if they suck, well they only cost $100, not the biggest loss in the world.
ps.. gluegun, well i can tell you're a headphone genius, how 'bout sound mastering/editing? since ur a local now, wondering if u might want to help me master my promo disc when its complete (that is, if u know how to go about this sort of thing).. |

Use MDR-V6 for (or HD280 or whatever studio stuff..) for mastering, and technics for DJing? |

| hmm.. v6 for studio for damn sure! hell i'd take 'em on the road if they didn't do such a good job of isolation that i wouldn't hear a firetruck barrelling down on me.. however.. y don't u like pioneer? something personal against the company? i guess i'll have to go check them out but i have yet to find someone that has tried both (pioneer se-dj5000 & technics rp-dj1200) in a club environment... so at this point im going on looks and practicality.. now the pioneers are made for ppl like me who use a shoulder to support the cup.. however seems like the technics eliminate the need for this, so i'll just have to try i guess, although having the cup sitting behind ur ear doesn't seem that comfortable w/ the headband in its normal position.. see i tend to have the headband almost to the rear of my head (to keep it from ruining my hair at first and it became habbit) so we'll see.. but most likely im still going w/ the pioneer.. also i like the straight cord at front that coils as it gets away from ur body.. i tend to move around also and have been known to get my coil on the v6 all twisted up very frustraiting to deal w/ when ur grabbing recs.. and also sometimes the coil snags the x-fader (because its tangled up tight and has no give) and sometimes cuts out tracks on my homies mixer cos his xfader is really feather light.. |

Technics or Pioneers i don't think you'd be disappointed with either of them!!
I too had pretty much made up my mind on getting a pair of the Pioneers but then i let myself get talked into a different pair. Now i regret not getting them when i saw them cause they were $200AUD at the time now they are $280!!! |

For DJing go with the Technics.
I've djed with Sennheiser HD280's, HD25's and Sony V700. Then I deided to buy the Technics cause they were the best for DJing. The Sony bass was not as clear at high levels, the 280's had hardly any bass and did not go very loud at all for a club environment, and the HD25's lost alot of Treble and Mid at the high levels with the bass pumping.
But no quarms about the Technics. Full Volume will not distort them. And they have incredible bass while delivering sharp and clear mids and highs. Very comfotable too! |
