Now you are switching gears a bit (semantics are important here). I know what music you are referring to by the use of "EDM" in this thread, and let me tell you, you cannot stretch words wide enough in any language to call EDM a musical genre, it is too broad on its own to be a genre, and it's too broad in the context of this thread to be it's own genre. The closest thing I can think of you guys are looking for here is "Top 40 EDM" (which still isn't a genre)
Just because you want to distance yourself from pop culture, doesn't mean the music isn't electronic dance music.
Let me give you a histortal metaphor. Say you like a rock band (Slowdive) who focus on a subgenre that isn't mainstream rock. The media is focusing on all their attention about this new rock music phenomena that is sweeping the nation, but all they are talking about is The Beatles. If we apply your argument, this would mean Slowdive isn't rock, but something else. Obviously neither of these bands were from the same era, but since I wasn't alive back when the beatles were together, throw in whatever other rock bands were around.
In this case, slowdive could be richie hawtin, green velvet, or whomever else, and the beatles would be david guetta, and I want to shoot myself for typing that out, but I hope you see my point. This is a time honoured and repeating argument about genres as certain substyles become popular or mainstream.
e: and to be fair, I would imagine some people would call "Rock" a genre, but I would liken it to more of an umbrella term, that EDM is. |
Great argument and metaphor! |

Come on, anyone who has been around knows what "EDM" is these days and the sound it encompasses. If you try to defend what this "EDM" sound is and downplay its awfulness, you are over-thinking definitionw and it's pointless to argue against someone that does.
"EDM" is its own genre these days. There was a time when we'd rep loving as it stood for all the genres in general. For most of us, saying we are a huge fan of "EDM specifically can be embarrassing knowing what it stereotypically represents....the "EDM genre is so awful that its "sound" can't even be properly defined into a stylistic genre. Tells you how ed up and wrong it is and how fast it just needs to rot. |

Again: define EDM if you want to make that argument. And "you guys know" is not an acceptable way to define a genre.
What is the beat structure and the sound style? What type of melodies? How does the music make you feel? You can define "vocal trance" and "bass house", and "Dark deep prog" or "techno", and you can define "electro house" but I bet you $100 you cannot define "EDM" in the way you are trying to.
It's not a genre.
And, Dave, come the on, no one here is downplaying how awful top 40 EDM is. You can't define it not because it's awful (you can define awful music just as easily as good music), it's because you're trying to group 20 different genres together into "EDM" and call it one thing because you don't like it and that makes it an easier target/easier than critically thinking about the subject
Its like taking half of house you don't like and calling it EDM, and half of trance you don't like and calling it EDM, and then saying EDM is a genre and it's all crap (actually this is exactly what you guys are trying to do)
There are requirements for defining a genre |

Except that the "house" and "trance" that I call EDM both sound the same. I don't give a what technically makes them sound the same. I don't listen to trance and analyze the song for structure etc to determine it's trance. All the main stage festival music sounds the same.

Tell that to Beatport. Last time I looked at the progressive house genre, there was nothing progressive about it. Call it whatever you want. Invent a new genre. But the term EDM is sticking regardless of your opinion. I fought it a long time as well so I know where you are coming from. |

Well, the record labels tell beatport what to categorize their music, not the other way around. *
As for your other point, not sure what to say - you're missing the point.
And I doubt history will look back in 10 or 20 years and say EDM was a genre, but I guess we can come back and post about it
e:* you can also find that beatport has sub-categories under each genre too (use the filters), although, again, lazy labels will incorrectly mark or not use that feature. |

maybe they need to add a pop dance genre or something |

Exactly :whip:
There really does need to be a new genre for that crap. And although a lot of us will call it EDM, that's really a poor name. But it wouldn't be the first time a definition has changed. |
