Well, what you have to realize is that Kim Kardashian spends around $20m on PR. That expenditure gets you mentioned on TMZ and E! on a daily basis, not to mention every trash mag in the supermarket checkout.
In some ways, the public doesn't give them all the attention - you quite literally cannot go a single week without mainstream or social media forcing you to see an image or quote of one of them. That amount of money spent means millions of impressions a week and all of it is leveraged aginst the TV show, magazine covers, events (such as bruce coming out) - it's all just choreographed advertising placement and positioning.
She's supporting the entire Klan, and actually the net income is pretty meagre - by the time you take away the costs of PR and advertising, and include the entire family living on that single revenue stream, she's probably only making $5m a year. Still a lot to most people but not the billionaire lifestyle they all portray.
You also have to understand that Ryan Seacrest is their manager. Due to his ties with Fox and 19 management (Simon Cowell, Simon Fuller etc) that gets you a lot of exposure, but they ream you for it. 19 are known for taking huge chinks of the income and "talent" is virtually left with peanuts.
The reason they push the K's so hard is that they get 15% of all of it for management and another 15% for agency, then they get to expense away so much of the revenue from the K's for things like jet travel, clothes etc, meaning the K's are a cash cows to them, and again, why it's rammed down our throats more than any other reality stars. They also don't have any talent so the one thing they bank on is just monetising fame. |

Really it comes down to us allowing ourselves to be consumed or even mildly interested in this bull, but the problem is you literally can't switch on a TV or Radio without it being rammed in to your skull. The good news is this is exactly why traditional news outlets that have succumbed to this sort of PR led, press release regurgitating mouthpieces are dying.
We get our news from elsewhere, rather than being forced to ponder which of the three ugly sisters had botox this week.
I deal with a lot of paparazzi's here through work here in LA and I can't you how abhorrent they are. They literally camp in people's trees and inside parking lots for hours which is tantamount to stalking (well, it actually is legally now thankfully). One very well known British actress I was chatting to said they've done awful like they'll wait outside her house, be talking to her as she's trying to move along then, mid conversation just try to spit at her or trip her up, just to try to get that single frame of that reaction. one even crashed their car in to hers so she had to stop and deal with him, all the while he's got a camera in her face giving her to provoke a picture worthy moment. he didn't even care that he charge arrested for dangerous driving.
All so that pic can sell for $50,000 and be on the cover of Star us US magazine for a day.
