Unless your only frame of reference is a Korg NanoKeys, the TR-8 is not considered a solidly constructed piece of gear. This isn't even worthy of debate. |
You think?
I didn't think the TR-8 was too bad considering the price point. Not as good as the Virus, but much better than any new Novation or M-Audio stuff. |

it looks like he was talking about flimsy sound, not hardware quality.
and the TR-8 is solidly built... not sure where you are getting this from. if you haven't used one, just seems like prejudice.
the faders are great, knobs and buttons are perfect. the green stripe round it makes it look like a kids toy, they let themselves down on that in some misguided attempt to brand the aira range as one family or some .
the unit itself could withstand some hostile impacts though. |

Exactly. It's not bad considering the price point (although the System-1, in particular, is built like a total POS at any price point IMO), but it's flimsy in comparison to high-end gear. That was basically my point - it's not comparable to high-end gear in terms of construction. That's not to say that it's not usable, of course. |

From playing one in stores and comparing it to the hundreds of synths, drum machines, studio gear, live PA gear, and instruments that I've owned over the last 40 years. Like I said, if your only frame of reference is cheap gear, then it probably feels solid in comparison. OTOH, if you're accustomed to using high-end gear, it doesn't. Because Roland cut corners on construction to make it affordable to the masses. Nothing wrong with that, but it is what it is. |

Ah ok
I think the materials used are probably relatively cheap, but the one I had was very solidly built
@rubez - it sounds awesome. Nothing like the originals, but good in its own right. |

nothing like the originals?
that's hyperbole surely. the whole point in its existence is to sound like the originals.
most people couldn't tell the difference between samples and analogue in a blind test, as snobby as they are, they'd likely get embarrassed in such a test.
the TR8 sounds better and is more robust than samples. most professional reviews said it was as close as makes no difference. you could only tell them apart in a few instances due to quirks (from both systems) and not necessarily from sound quality either.
not forgetting that the sound from 'identical' analogue units can vary slightly due to a number of factors, so there really is no 'definitive' sound. i think the TR8 developers got a bunch of 808, 909's and took the best instance of each instrument from each unit - as they all were a little different. |
