In December I became a Dad, which meant that basically taking a break from mixing for a little while. About a month ago my wife took the litlun down to her parents for a week, leaving me to not do the washing up and sit around in my pants for a week.
Obviously the first thing I did upon returning from dropping them off was to take some beer down to the studio and what the decks on. I didn't bother hooking up Traktor, just went for a meander through my vinyl collection and also happened to record some of it, taking in alot of dark moody prog house, techno and trance from the late 90s early 2000s.
I've agonised about sharing this a little, mostly because after 6 months of inactivity my mixing skills were a little rusty. Add beer and gin (the keener listener will be able to spot were the gin joined the party ;)) to this there are a few somewhat wonky mixes but I've enjoyed listening back to it so thought others might too!
It doesnt really have a beginning or end as such, I just sort of started with the first tune that came to my hand and then kept playing until my motor skills were too impaired to continue (it fades out just before a massive trainwreck after which I had a word with myself and went to bed)

Finally got around to this today.
Really enjoyed the opening 40 mind or so, some great prog and techno there creating a really good sense of atmosphere and momentum. The culmination of this was the Mac Zimms track (what a bass line) followed by the faithless remix which sounded really menacing and reminded me of the good old days when I could hear music I liked in superclubs.
I thought you lost the flow a bit going into 'Run' and so made a good choice to take it back in to tech trance with that Dogzilla track (is this where the gin starts flowing?).
You the played one of the worst records I've ever heard. I think it's probably the Dave Clarke remix but I can't be sure. If I ever wanted to put someone off dance music, I would either play them that or Mario Piu - Communication.
You quickly redeem yourself with the bedrock mix of cowgirl, which is an absolute monster. You've got it pitched to the 9s here but it still sounds brilliant and really intense. I was hoping for some dave king magic in the mix to follow up as I've never heard anyone keep the energy up after that track and sadly I don't think you managed it either.
Big grins all around for Solar Factor, another gem from my gods kitchen days. I wasn't overly fond of the trance tunes you followed it up with, but really enjoyed the prog at the end. Especially Blue Amazon!
Over all I really enjoyed it, I would have gone mad in a club! Really good mixing too for the most part |

Jon I greatly appreciate you taking the time to do such an in depth review of what basically amounts to the ramblings of a drunk :)
I can see what you're saying about that DC remix but I like it so nuts to you :D
That bedrock mix of cowgirl is a bit of a nightmare to mix out of because its crying out for a long blend as it strips back to just the percussion but it drops out far too quickly. Annoyingly it works quite well with the original mix of electric deluxe but Id already played the smith and selway mix earlier and wasnt drunk enough to have forgotten! |
