I played a gig in Holland last weekend which was absolutely awesome! was on first in the main room and then again from 4 - 6 am in the Chill out room, as a stand in for another DJ that was unavailable. I don't play chill out or ambient - never have, never likely to. However, it seems that everyone's idea of what a chill out set is differs, and this melodic prog set went down really well!

I'm aware that there are a couple of massive key clashes in there, which I put down to sleep deprivation (had been travelling since 9:00 in the morning to get there). Would love to hear your thoughts |

| One of my favourite sets of yours, Jon. I always prefer it when you stay in the melodic progressive zone rather than succumbing to the bosh temptation. I also thought the mixing was some of your best - even the couple of notable key clashes weren't distractingly bad. The blend from Candyland into Echoes was sumptuous and those two tracks together formed a clear peak to the set, after which you dialed down the intensity nicely. It's not too common to hear a Jon Cockle set that doesn't ramp up constantly, and you did it very well. And most importantly the tunes were top notch. |

Thanks very much for the hefty praise! You would have loved it in that chill out room, the dιcor and atmosphere was awesome. I'm glad you picked up on the fact that I've structured this differently to how I probably would have done had the room not been advertised as 'Chill Out', and you are right that the biggest reaction of the night probably came from Eddie Bitz - Echoes. I was aware that if I'd kept the energy at that level, I'd have been breaking the rules massively and it wouldn't have been very fare on the next DJ
There's only 2 transitions on this that bug me - the one from Guy Manzur into Martin Merkel isn't massively dissonant, but it does sound lazy which is a problem so early in the set (but didn't matter at all on the night) and then the one from Tidal into New France is painful. I can remember seeing that going so well in my head at the time haha
We must do another joint set again soon :) |

| I actually think we would work perfectly at a chill-out room at a psy event if we played on-off-again. We could do the whole night and the hippies would probably love it. |

My hearing must be terrible, because I didn't really notice the key clashes :o Only transition that bothered me was Tidal -> New France.
But my brain may also have simply overlooked them because the tunes were great. Only one I disliked was John's remix of Shiloh, which I suppose I hadn't heard before. The Moshic tunes were new to me and great, while of course Candyland is fantastic as always.
Would love to hear this sort of set in person, in a chillout room or no :) |
