The only thing I'm worried about are eventual compatibility issues with programs, plugins and what not...so far Windows 7 has been rock solid.

This will only be the case with very specific gear. For example Presonous Firebox. They stopped writing drivers for it after XP I think. Definitely not officially supported in Win 8 BUT...you can still install drivers written for older OS's and use it just fine. Stop being afraid of change.

Still, if you're running a fully functional Win 7, I see no reason why you should upgrade any time soon. Hell, I'd still be using XP on my main desktop if it had not gone up in smoke a while back.

Well for a start it's faster and file copying isn't near completely broken, there's also EUFI support and a better task manager and a myriad of other things.

Agreed people lose sight of that the primary purpose of an OS is to launch programs and manage files. While the interface has been dressed up over the years the fundamentals haven't changed much. Only significant change was Windows 7 64 bit.

Actually the most major changes happened between XP and Vista.

Also, I don't think you understand the role of a modern operating system. Creating and maintaining standards for a variety of things (like graphics handling, coding feature support and hardware interfacing) is a very important part of a modern operating system. Things like whether compatibility breaks or whether a new OS handles certain situations in a way that causes it be less likely to crash can be quite important; and neither of those have to do with "launching programs" and "managing files". That's essentially a lot of what DOS did and yet there's a hell of a lot of features of modern OS's that you wouldn't want to be without.

It's looking like the changes from windows 8 are fairly incremental so there'll be few compatability issues between 8 and 10. I know a few people who've tested out quite a few programs to confirm this. In particular the different versions of directx are fairly compatible.

you can update pirated windows 7 fine.

Why do you always jump to the dumbest first conclusion?

Right now, they are offering it for free, you can't even buy the OS if you wanted to now, and the fresh install option isn't even available, so being annoyed at having to wait until it's launched is pretty stupid.

When they actually release it you can just buy a key and download the ISO/boot image for a fresh install.

Sure, that might be the situation now, but if MS sticks to their plan to only ever do gradual updates to 10, who knows what it will be like a few years down the line.

Yes, who knows what 10 will be like in 8 years, but you can still run anything legacy in compatibility mode and I've never had problems on the rare occasions I'm trying to use a bit of hardware that was made to be used on an OS 4 generations gone. It's also life; moves on, some hardware becomes obsolete over time.

Windows 7 is fine, but there was a reason for 8 - Touchscreen compatibility sucks on it. M$ didn't at all nail it with 8, but at least it was a lot easier to use with touch interfaces that 7 and has tons more native support.

And don't let nostalgia blind you regarding XP. It was agreat OS at the time, but comapred to what we have today, it's actually fairly limited; there's not even quick search function built in to XP and even when you add the bolt on, the indexing is horrific so it's incredibly slow and misses items. Think about that; I can't like without a quick search function in OSX or W8.1. It's changed the way we use OS's.

Exactly. We aren't going to see the massive leaps like we did 15 years ago. Things have leveled out and improvements are going to incremental and complementary rather than fundamental shifts.

I picked up a copy of 8.1 wasn't as bad as I thought. Start up is slower, I don't like media player isn't included and changed to boot directly to desktop.

So do you not use faster, more efficient functions just to spite yourself?

Go ahead, use XP and try to find a file that contains a particular search term. See you in 30mins.

Search is for those who don't know where their files are.
